The Block 2021 guest bedroom reveal recap: Mitch and Mark's room is canned by judges

The first room reveal of The Block 2021 results in very different outcomes for the Faves teams.

Mitch and Mark‘s pared back guest bedroom gets panned by judges Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker, but Ronnie and Georgia impress with attention to detail and a dramatically high ceiling.

Ahead of the guest bedroom judging, there are, as always, a few last-minute dramas. Josh and Luke have the site buzzing when Mitch realises they hadn’t returned home from their night out.

The twins eventually rock up to site, but after they’re breathalysed, they’ve got to stay off the tools for a few more hours because they still have alcohol in their systems. Once they’re back at it, Keith and Dan discover a long list of defects they need to fix, but the task is left up to Josh when Luke becomes unwell.

The Block 2021 listings are now live. See each of the listings here:

The defects report, which will now be given to the judges before they look at each finished room, also pulled Mitch and Mark up.

Tanya and Vito were faced with significant bowing issues in their report, which Dan had warned them about earlier in the week, resulting in Vito sacking his builder.

With defects addressed in three of the five houses, and finishing touches on the guest bedrooms complete, the teams head to the Royal Hampton Yacht Club-themed Block headquarters to hear host Scott Cam deliver the judges’ feedback.

The judges are instantly impressed by Ronnie and Georgia’s high ceilings and Velux skylights when they first walk in. As they continue to look around, the sophisticated design choices win all three over.

“Everything is so considered — there’s the arches in the artwork, we’ve got the arches in the side tables, you look at the little curves in the wall. It’s so considered it’s frightening,” Shaynna says.

Darren agrees: “They have everything you want. They’ve been styled beautifully, the internal finishes, all the fixtures — I mean there’s so much to love. This is Ronnie and Georgia 2.0.”

Shaynna and Darren are surprised by one misstep though, with the doors on the wardrobe opening from the left to the right, instead of from the middle.

Overall, the judges love the coastal look Ronnie and Georgia are going for this season, which is a shift from the moodier vibe in their 2017 Elsternwick renovation.

“This shows how you can deliver a neutral room but keep it interesting. I mean what a start! It’s so resolved. And it’s reminded me of what Ronnie and Georgia can do,” Neale says.

The couple hope the judges will be pleasantly surprised by their guest bedroom, which is a more subtle look compared to their Oslo house from 2019.

While Shaynna admits it’s great to see them go in a different direction, the room was a huge thumbs down for the judges.

For Neale, the first issue is the size. “I actually feel quite claustrophobic in here, it feels very, very small. Oppressively small actually,” he explains.

“That is not the kind of rookie error I would expect from Mitch and Mark.”

Suddenly a list of issues arise, including the safety hazard caused by a lit candle underneath a lamp shade.

Ultimately, the judges feel Mitch and Mark haven’t pulled off the pared-back look.

“I’m finding this a little bland,” Neale says, before listing things he does like, including the pink salt-coloured wardrobe.

“But I feel this room is quite generic and that’s not a word I would never ever have used with Mitch and Mark.”

Before leaving the room Shaynna asks Darren to blow the candle out before the room burns down, leading Neale to make a shock joke.

“That’s not such a bad thing,” he remarks, prompting a gasp from Darren as well as the contestants listening to the feedback at Block HQ.

First impressions are positive for the judges. Shaynna loves the shade of bedspread, while Darren thinks the colour palette used to style the bed is “cool” and ties in with the artwork above it.

Though the sheer curtain is a hit, Darren comments that the lack of pelmet around the curtain rod makes the window dressing seem cheap.

“It’s no excuse for someone who does window furnishings as a living,” Scotty says, reading back the judges’ thoughts.

The amount of storage in the room also isn’t what the judges expect in a family home. Plus the Foreman’s Report had glaring issues that Darren realises are “lingering on”.

“Those skylights, they are out of whack, so that’s huge. That gyprock and that set edge [points to a corner of the room], which is made out of steel, just goes, straight, straight, straight, straight and then kicks out like a flared trouser,” he says.

There are positives including a sense of personality in the styling, which Neale thinks is a contemporary take on the 1950s. Meanwhile, Darren likes the layout and use of space, and all judges are happy to see growth from Tanya and Vito’s challenge room.

“Ooh this is… different,” Shaynna says as she walks in for the first time.

“This is different good,” Darren finishes, before adding it’s a major improvement on their challenge room.

Neale describes the space as “luxe… sexy” and points out the wardrobe, prompting Darren to profess his appreciation for the glass doors.

“I like it, it’s hot,” he said.

But Shaynna is not a fan, reminding Darren it wouldn’t be relaxing to lay back on the bed and see your clothes hanging, especially if they weren’t hung neatly.

“I… hate… it,” Shaynna declares. “It will end up looking ‘bachie pad’.”

Darren and Neale admit they’re surprised by how much they like the glass doors, and in Darren’s case he loves basically everything from the bed head to the colour palette.

Shaynna praises the twins’ styling, leading the pair to give some credit to Mitch and Mark for their help.

The vibe the judges get when they walk into Kirsty and Jesse‘s guest bedroom is coastal, country and chic.

Shaynna is pleased to see the couple has nailed details Hamptons locals will love, including the cornicing, skirting boards and soft blue tone.

“I think that’s going to be very big on people’s list of wants when they’re buying in this area,” she explains.

Though Neale likes the colour palette in this room, especially the subtle palm tree themed wallpaper behind the bed, he doesn’t want them to do it in every room.

“I want to see more nuance,” he says.

However, that positive feedback wasn’t really for the entire space.

“One half of the room has got beauty and softness and the other half almost feels unfinished,” Shaynna says.

Neale fights the urge to pull the narrow window opposite the bed down to the level of the other window.

But Kirsty and Jesse get the thumbs up for size, storage and execution.

Guest Bedroom scores

Back at HQ, Scotty tallies up the judges’ scores, revealing the competition is already tight.

  • Ronnie and Georgia: 24.5
  • Mitch and Mark: 22.5
  • Tanya and Vito: 23
  • Josh and Luke: 24
  • Kirsty and Jesse: 23

Faves Ronnie and Georgia take the win by half a point and score a nice $10,000 cash injection to their overall renovation budget.

But the judges’ feedback has Mitch and Mark fuming.

“I respectfully disagree [with the judges],” Mark says.

Mitch adds, “I disrespectfully disagree.”

Mitch and Mark have a chance to turn things around in week two, with the guest ensuite the next space to complete.
