Ronnie and Georgia think they’ve got one over Tanya and Vito when they decide to play the bonus point Gnome in the living and dining reveals on The Block. Instead their decision leads to an awkward situation no one saw coming.
As for the reveals themselves, some living and dining rooms get smiles and even inspire skipping from judges Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker. Others, however, leave the judges scratching their heads over layout choices.
The tension between House 1 and House 3, which grew out of the cheating scandal, shows no signs of abating in the day before tools down.
A huge load of furniture containing both Georgia and Tanya’s orders is delivered on Saturday morning in front of House 1, blocking an entryway. Georgia finds it strange that Tanya hasn’t even started looking for her goods, and asks for the boxes to be moved to the verge at the end of the cul-de-sac.
“There’s a skip bin out the front of our verge and there’s a space, a clear space next to it, so I just popped all their stuff there and I just left a little sign saying ‘Free to a good home’,” Georgia says.
“Tanya can come get it if she’s brave enough, because she likes to talk a lot of s–t about us.”
It’s not until 5.47pm that Tanya realises she hasn’t got her deliveries and starts looking for them. She visits each team to see if they got dropped off at the wrong house, and when she finally gets to House 1, Georgia tells her they’re on the verge.
Tanya heads down to collect them just as the Bingo truck arrives to collect the rubbish from the skip bin.
But it doesn’t end there. Ronnie and Georgia have a bonus point Gnome up their sleeves, and a dream scenario for using it.
“I hope they win by half a point and then we just drop the Gnome on them,” Ronnie says.
Georgia adds, “Out of all the people on The Block who I would like to use the Gnome on, top of the list would be Tanya and Vito.”
Now let’s visit Block Headquarters to hear host Scott Cam read out the judges’ feedback.
When the judges enter Ronnie and Georgia’s living and dining room they feel like everything the couple have done in their other rooms makes sense now, as it was all leading to this.
“You’ve got these vast, soaring raked ceilings with all those skylights, all this natural light, lots of texture with the Caesarstone and the fluted panelling, the fireplace — so much texture,” Darren says.
The choice of bouclé chairs and sofa is a perfect choice for Shaynna as its very on trend right now.
Over in the dining area, Darren loves the dining table and the way it’s been styled with colours that echo the beautiful painting on the wall behind it.
Apart from a minor painting issue between skylights, the “super chic” space is something the judges think will appeal to many buyers.
The judges are wowed by the skylights in the cathedral-like ceiling when they walk into Mitch and Mark’s living and dining room. And that’s pretty much where the positive comments stop.
Darren and Neale feel like there is a lot of dead and wasted space around a table, which was placed in the centre of the room to symbolise a non-existent hallway.
“It doesn’t feel like it’s flowing. And I’m looking around thinking, ‘This feels very unfinished’. It feels like a bit of this and a bit of that, like a series of vignettes in different corners of the space, but they’re not meshing to create a home,” Neale says.
The judges decided to give the couch a try but found themselves feeling uncomfortable.
“I just feel like I’m sitting in a waiting room. I’m sorry,” Neale says.
On the plus side, the judges think it would only take a few tweaks to improve the space.
It was Tanya and Vito’s dream to have a sunken lounge in their Block house, and it has paid off, with Shaynna, Darren and Neale in love with the feature.
Darren thinks it’s “fun and playful… and cool and retro”, while Shaynna admits she’s always wanted one herself.
“It’s just been so well thought through. There are some beautiful views from here. I’m looking at those floor-to-ceiling blinds and then the contrast with this lovely brick of the fireplace here,” Neale says.
The dining area is a hit too, with round skylights in the ceiling and a bright white wall and stunning fireplace. Having an additional sitting space next to the dining table is also a plus for the judges.
“It just keeps on giving, doesn’t it?” Neale says.
Shaynna loves the space so much she actually skips out of the house.
While the judges think Josh and Luke’s living and dining room has everything going for it, the layout doesn’t live up to expectations.
The Christian Cole dining table isn’t where Shaynna, Darren and Neale think it should be. They want the dining area switched with the living room.
The judges love the table itself, the styling not so much.
“It’s magnificent, and it is the star and it should be made to feel the star. I feel even the chairs don’t complement it. This is quite earthy and I feel that we need fabric and texture, I don’t think we need velvet,” Shaynna says.
In the living room area, Shaynna feels the rug makes the space seem small, and they should get a different one entirely if they swap the living and dining.
“Pull the TV off the wall, put it over there (points to the dining area). A massive rug in there. Another one of these (sofa), another one of these (armchair). A round rug for here (the living room),” Darren suggests.
The judges think the twins just got overwhelmed by the space and encourage them to find the time to try switching the layout up.
“Honey, I’m home,” Neale says as he, Shaynna and Darren enter Kirsty and Jesse’s living and dining room.
All three of the judges get a warm and cosy vibe from the space, which instantly makes Shaynna want to get comfy on the couch.
While Kirsty and Jesse’s loungeroom is much smaller than the other team’s, Darren thinks the large sofa makes it seem much bigger than it is.
“It feels like the perfect family space,” Shaynna says.
There are a couple of negatives though. Darren thinks the angular fireplace, which juts out between the living and dining areas, creates a void with “no purpose”.
But the navy and white striped wallpaper, which Kirsty and Jesse’s trades said looked like the Greek flag, was a hit as the backdrop to a cute sitting area.
The judges also like the dining area and think the table, chairs and styling are spot on.
It’s now time for the judges’ scores. Scotty, as always, starts writing up Darren and Shaynna’s scores on the board. At this stage Ronnie and Georgia are half a point behind Tanya and Vito, so when asked if they will play their bonus point Gnome, Ronnie and Georgia go for it.
But it doesn’t have the result they’re hoping for.
It’s a tie between Ronnie and Georgia and Tanya and Vito!
The two teams will split the $10,000 on offer for the room win. As for the night away to Red Hill, part of the prize for coming first, Scotty has conveniently booked accommodation with three bedrooms, meaning the two couples can go together.
Ronnie and Georgia try to politely decline the getaway but Scotty won’t have it.
“You don’t have to go if you don’t want to, but how are you going to get your $5,000?” he teases.
Georgia responds, “Tanya and Vito can pick it up.”
“No, no, no, no. You don’t go, you don’t get your $5k,” Scotty says, as the other three teams laugh hysterically.
Tanya and Vito appear to be all smiles about the couples trip and even think it could give them a chance to get over their differences with some “bonding”.
“Did we waste the Gnome?” Georgia wonders as she and Ronnie leave.
And we suspect she’ll be pondering that all the way to Red Hill and back.
