There was shock as both Ankur and Sharon, and Dylan and Jenny’s houses failed to sell during The Block 2022 auction.

Both properties were passed in when they failed to attract a bidder over their $4.08 million reserve price with both attracting a highest bid of $4.075 million.

After Tom and Sarah-Jane only made $20,000, Houses 3 and 4 learned from their co-stars’ mistake and pushed to have their houses passed in, in the hopes that they could negotiate better deal later down the track.

The couples continued to negotiate with their highest bidders after filming and as of 9pm on Sunday November 6, they are both still open to other offers to buy their homes.

It’s the first time that a Block property has failed to sell at auction since Josh and Jenna, and Rod and Tania in Series 4 in 2011.

Scott Cam described the auction as “a bittersweet day”.

“We had one incredible high and some crushing lows for our Blockheads, who all worked the hardest I’ve ever seen to deliver these houses,” he said in a statement after the auctions.

“As we’ve seen many times before, we’ll continue to negotiate with interested buyers to sell these homes, which are still on the market. I’m gunning for a positive result.”

Block co-creator and executive producer Julian Cress pinned the “volatile real estate market” and “large and unexpected interest rate increases” as factors that contributed to the two houses not selling.

“While we had many registered bidders, clearly something has spooked the market. But we believe the properties are of incredible value and we think they will find new owners very soon, to deliver a well-deserved reward for our contestants’ hard work,” Julian added.

Early on in the Grand Finale episode Domain’s Alice Stolz warned the Blockheads there was “risk of not all properties selling” during the auctions.

“The market is in a very different place than it was this time last year,” Alice Stolz told the contestants.

“We’ve just gone through a massive rate of interest rate rises, with another one this week. Now what that’s doing is putting pressure on prices and we’re seeing prices soften.”

But Ankur and Sharon have their own theory as to why their house didn’t sell at auction.

“Unfortunately there wasn’t enough bidding in the room,” Sharon told 9Entertainment moments after their auction.

“We had registered bidders there … I think after what happened at House 1, people got a bit shy.”

House 4’s Dylan and Jenny were less positive about their outcome and put the massively contrasting auction results down to other teams “playing the game”.

Jenny felt that winners Omar and Oz had pitted Danny Wallis against new Block buyer Adrian Portelli.

“They knew that Danny is very competitive,” Jenny explained.

“I just feel like they were playing the game the whole time and it shows.

“It’s not what you know it’s who you know and obviously it paid off didn’t it.”

Jenny added that cost of living prices were another reason there weren’t as many interested buyers for their property.

“I know they [the houses] are worth $6 million, but people don’t have that kind of money at the moment,” she said.

The teams were all apprehensive about how the auctions would go after getting their reserves of $4,080,000.

Everyone expected – and hoped – for a reserve starting with a three, but unfortunately it wasn’t the case.

While Scotty was optimistic at the start, his faith in the buyers didn’t work out in the end and only three of the five homes sold.

With the Houses 3 and 4 still on the market there are hopes that Ankur and Sharon and Dylan and Jenny could still walk away with a substantial profit.

Here’s hoping that the couples reach a desirable result in their negotiations in the coming days.
