The Block 2024 clubhouse reveal recap: Perfect score nabs team a game-changing prize

November 6, 2024

Welcome to the final, sun-soaked recap of The Block. With the houses now complete, the contestants moved on to overhaul the communal areas and, after 13 long weeks of grit, grouting, and more than a few standoffs, Phillip Island’s clubhouse vision has finally emerged – and, at last, it feels like a real holiday retreat.

The contestants were joined by a bunch of former Blockheads who were ready to give them a helping hand in the final week. They pulled out every trick in the toolbox to impress the judges for one last time, creating lush al fresco dining setups, a calming “wellness centre” and an impressive cinema and games room. And with the game-changing prize of $50,000 off their auction reserves up for grabs, no team was holding back.

So, sit back, grab the popcorn and prepare for a tour of Phillip Island’s most glamorous new clubhouse.

House 1: Maddy and Charlotte clubhouse reveal

Maddy and Charlotte, alongside All-Stars Ronnie and Georgia, threw down the gauntlet with their luxurious rotunda space, but would their designs (yes, we’re talking about The Blocky-Wood Walk of Fame) be enough to sway the judges?

Maddy and Charlotte’s rotunda features a stunning barbecue area and private dining room, surrounded by a beautifully landscaped garden that includes an in-ground (and very expensive) trampoline for the kids.

“The extent of the amenity you’ve added is incredible!” judge Shaynna Blaze raves. “We’ve got a pizza oven, a barbecue, and a sink, you can have round-table discussions.” Fellow judge Marty Fox is also impressed: “I can’t see anything that I’d want to change. It’s just so good.” And who could argue?

The custom table in the private dining room, designed to seat 15 or 16, is a showstopper: “This is a custom table, and it’s delightful,” judge Darren Palmer says. But it’s not all rosy, as he points out the potential awkwardness of the seating arrangements.

“If you’re one of the two people sitting in the middle there … you gotta crawl under the table to go use the loo, right?” Marty adds, “You’re not leaving the party. No one seems to mind, though. As Shaynna says, “The planning here is spectacular, the wallpaper is divine. I’m loving those shell lights … and there’s a fire.”

They wander outside to discover the kids’ outdoor play area. “There’s lots of function and amenity in this space, isn’t there? Darren says. “You have a games area, plus a sandpit with the trampoline.” Shaynna adds, “It’s beautiful and I think they should be so proud,” and Marty says, “Maddy and Charlotte have hit it out of the ballpark.”

House 2: Courtney and Grant clubhouse reveal

If you thought House 1 was impressive, hold onto your swim caps because House 2, along with last year’s winners, Steph and Gian, blasts us into the next realm of luxury.

The judges are practically drooling at the entrance. “This has just taken my breath away. The Block has a day spa,”  Shaynna says, and Marty adds: “A buyer would not expect to see anything like this.” Clearly, expectations were not just met — they were blown to smithereens!

That heated stone slab really won the judges over. Photo: Nine

The star of the show? A heated slab of stone that has everyone buzzing. “Yes, it’s actually a heated slab,” Marty says. Darren (still clothed) gives it a test run, saying, “It’s actually lovely and comfortable to sit in. I know it’s a hard surface.” And Shaynna has to try it, too.

“I don’t know what I was expecting from these spaces. I mean, this was Scotty’s bloody shed. And look at it now. It’s luxe,” Darren says. And indeed, it has transformed into a sanctuary of luxury.

Standing in the serene atmosphere, Marty can’t help but comment, “It looks incredible, but actually being here, it’s like, I am calm standing here, believe it or not.”

Shaynna went bananas over that sink. Photo: Nine

Shaynna says you could book this out as just a couple’s day spa, or, “You could book it as a family. You could have a girls’ hens’ night. You could have a retreat here in your very own resort.” The options are endless.

“And it does feel like you could be anywhere in the world at any of the top day spas across the planet,” Marty says. “This is up there with that quality.”

As they judges venture deeper into the space, Marty says that if he finds a sauna he’s going to lose his mind. And what does he discover? Not one, but two saunas. They’ve just made Marty’s day.

“That’s seven, eight people, that are capable of actually using the wellness centre,” he says. “This isn’t just a gimmick. This is great planning, incredible design, amazing amenity and bang for buck for the buyer. I have never seen anything like this before.”

As they move to the bathroom area, the judges are once again impressed, with Marty exclaiming, “It’s a full experience. To be able to have a sauna for six to eight people, the double ice baths, the private lockers … it’s got the form, it’s got the function, like everything. Tick, tick, tick.

House 3: Ricky and Haydn clubhouse reveal

Ricky and Haydn teamed up with The Block 2023 contestants Eliza and Liberty to create an impressive al fresco area that wowed the judges.

“Oh, wow. Oh, wow,” gasps Shaynna as she takes it all in. Marty’s jaw practically hits the floor. “This is massive. How many Veluxe [skylights] are there?” he asks, wide-eyed. Darren is quick to rattle off, “Twenty-four different Veluxes, two big-ass fans, and a whole bunch of appeal.”

A visibly impressed Shaynna says “this is the most chic version of Ricky and Haydn and Eliza and Liberty we have ever seen”.

'This is massive.' Photo: Nine

This sprawling area comes with two large dining tables and a spacious lounge, perfect for gatherings. “You can see lots of people and be poolside, or you can be fireside,” Darren says, capturing the versatility they’d built in.

Marty says that, out of all the spaces they’ve judged, this one was the clear front-runner for year-round use. “In summer, you’ve got these amazing roll-down blinds which protect you from that heavy summer sun, but then in winter, I couldn’t think of a better place to be than next to that fire burning. I just love this whole space.”

Marty is completely smitten by the fireplace. Photo: Nine

Marty is completely smitten by the fireplace. “You’ve got the ability to put a pizza up the top, throw some snags on, a steak – I’ve never seen a fireplace like this before,” he says. “I want one!” Darren is equally impressed, exclaiming, “I can’t see anything here that I can’t call perfect.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be a judging session without a little critique, and Shaynna wasn’t going to let them off that easily. “Eliza and Liberty weren’t known for [styling], and the boys weren’t known for it as well,’ she says. “I would have liked just a little bit more styling. It’s not about money; it’s about that little bit extra.”

Darren, however, loves the simplicity, calling it “gorgeous”. “Lifestyle-wise, it’s amazing,” he says. “The colour palette is beautiful. It’s so simple and pared back. I’m very, very impressed.”

House 4: Kylie and Brad clubhouse reveal

After Kylie and Brad left the competition after the final house reveal (and forgoing the chance to win a massive $50,00 off their reserve), it was up to former Block winners Jimmy and Tam to deliver the communal games room.

Tam acknowledged the tricky handover of partially completed spaces. “Kylie had designed some elements of that space previously,” she explains. “When you’re coming into a design that has already been started, it’s difficult.“

Shaynna is instantly taken as she steps inside, saying, “This gets better every time you turn around.” Marty, equally impressed, can’t believe his eyes. “Oh, is this The Block? This is insaaaaane.”

Darren loves their bold choices, “Look at this colour palette,” he says. “These browns and autumnal tones are very on-trend. It’s bolshy and risky … a couple of years ago, you would just absolutely say that’s a no-go, but it’s really nice.”

Summing up the essence of the room, Marty says, “You’ve got the bar, the games, the billiards, footy on the TV. There’s heaps of seating within the area. It’s just so practical, but it’s not lacking on that design front. It is still stunning.” He likens it to “the Fun Factory, but for adults”.

Shaynna loves 'the sense of warmth in here'. Photo: Nine

The glowing feedback keeps coming as Shaynna continues, “I just love the sense of warmth in here. It’s the colour, it’s the skylights, it’s these beautiful overhead pendant lights.”

But as the accolades pour in, there is a bittersweet feeling in the room. “The sad thing about this is, this isn’t in the race of the competition,’ Shaynna points out. And Marty adds, “You know what’s crazy? I feel like this could have been a winner.”

House 5: Kristian and Mimi clubhouse reveal

Kristian and Mimi, alongside The Block 2013 winners Alisa and Lysandra, set out to create a jaw-dropping kitchen and cinema space. And boy, did they deliver.

“This is beautiful,” Darren says when he sees the kitchen.

They gush over the colour palette, the durability of materials, and the appliances throughout, but the piece de resistance? The hidden cinema tucked behind cabinetry doors, worthy of James Bond himself. “Oh, this is not normal,” Marty gasps. Shaynna shares his shock, exclaiming, “What the actual …” as she dashes inside to take it all in.

“This is one of the best rooms I’ve ever seen – period,” Marty says. And honestly, who could disagree? Shaynna is beside herself with excitement, pointing out all the incredible features in the room, visibly overwhelmed by the brilliance of it all.

The praise keeps coming. Marty reckons that if this cinema were listed on Airbnb, it’d be the hottest booking around. “This wins. This is the most appealing room by a country mile,” he says.

The judges agree: this is the best room they've ever seen on The Block. Photo: Nine

“People are gonna go wild for this,” Shaynna says, highlighting the curved niches and beautifully lit arches. “This collaboration is literally a match made in heaven,’ she adds, clearly smitten by the teams’ synergy. The Zen-like ambience of the cinema feels like an escape from reality. “Walking through those James Bond-like doors, you are taken totally away,” Marty says.

“This is the last one that we’ve seen in 20 seasons of The Block, and it just happens to be the best we’ve ever seen,” Darren adds.

Wrapping up, the judges can’t deny the huge value these communal areas add to each property. “I think this adds so much value to everybody’s house that any downfall their houses had will be made up for here,” Shaynna says.

Marty notes that such amenities are usually only seen in high-density developments. “You only see this type of amenity when you’ve got 70, 80, 90 properties within that development,” he explains. “But here, you’re only sharing it with maybe another 20, 30, 40 people. This will never be done again. This is a one-off in Australia. They’re a steal.”

With such high praise for each team, it’s anyone’s guess as to who’ll take out the win – it’ll be close. Over the the judges for scoring.

House Team Score Place
House 1 Maddy and Charlotte 28.5 3rd
House 2 Courtney and Grant 28.5 3rd
House 3 Ricky and Haydn 27.5 5th
House 4 Kylie and Brad 29 2nd
House 5 Kristian and Mimi 30 1st

With some of the highest (and closest) scores we’ve seen this season, Kristian and Mimi nabbed the win with a perfect 30, as well as the potentially game-changing prize of having a whopping $50,000 taken off their reserve on auction day.

With every detail polished to perfection, the stage is now set for an auction that promises to be as intense as a buyer’s bidding war.

The Block auction finale will air on Nine at 7pm on Sunday, November 10.
