The Block 2024 front garden, facade and garage reveal: Contestants deliver final spaces of the season

November 3, 2024

It’s the final week of season 20, and the Blockheads are downing tools on their homes for good. With a shiny new Ford Mustang dangling like a carrot, everyone’s pouring the last drops of energy – and whatever scraps of budget they’ve got left – into their front yards and garages.

The judges are gearing up for one last round of cutthroat critiques of the houses, so let’s dive in and see who’s still standing and who’s stomping off into the night.

For Maddy and Charlotte, this week was all about the finishing touches and making a big impression.

As the judges pull up, they’re immediately struck by the grand scale of the facade. Marty is momentarily awestruck, uttering, “What a facade. How beautiful is this?’ And the admiration kept coming, with Shaynna calling it “incredible”. But Dave, ever the realist, chimes in, “Does it need a little bit of something else? I think it does.”

Darren, however, finds himself won over by the garage, declaring, “This is one of the best-styled garages I think I’ve ever seen on The Block.”

Shaynna is also charmed. “I love the scene the Grafico [wallpaper] sets. That’s how I remember Phillip Island. So, to me, that sets the nostalgia and that connection to this incredible space they’ve been given. They’re telling the story, they’re selling the dream, they’re selling the imagination – in a garage.”

The expansive front lawn stirs up mixed reviews among the judges. Dave is thrilled by its sheer size, envisioning its potential: “They have got a huge front lawn, which I can obviously play cricket [on].” Marty, however, is already picturing it through a buyer’s lens, suggesting, “The first thing I’d be doing as a buyer is getting a hedge growing along this lawn.”

Despite a few minor critiques, House 1 closes out on a high note, with the judges applauding Maddy and Charlotte’s journey. “They came in with a bang and did some really good stuff … we’ve got to acknowledge how great they’ve done with the house,” Shaynna says.

“They did a bloody good job,” adds Marty.

House 2’s front yard is the epitome of coastal elegance, and the judges notice immediately. Darren sums it up, “That’s more like it. That looks lush and expensive … and inviting.”

Their carefully chosen plants and contrasting textures capture their attention. “I love it. Visually, it is warm, it’s cozy, it’s rich, and audibly, it’s just insane. You can hear those amazing water features, and it’s a really nice contrast as well with House 1, how this exterior, it feels very beachy,” Marty says.

They also love the arbour flanked by lily pilly on both sides. “That lily pilly will hedge up and be quite tall. So you’ll be walking down like a long hallway of just beautiful green with those lovely architectural arbours leading into that beautiful void,” Darren says.

He’s also loving the entryway and can’t keep his hands off the large timber door: “I love the handles, I love the profile of the door. This is entrance appeal.”

Over in the garage, Shaynna commends its simplicity, “The garage has got what a garage needs.”

While Marty would’ve preferred a cosier garage, Shaynna shut down the notion. “How much time do you spend in the garage? Do you want to feel cosy in a garage?” “I’m a Car Man,” Marty retorts. “I actually love being in the garage.” Darren’s with Shaynna on this one: “I would have far preferred to see less interest in the garage and more interest in the front yard in House 1. This is the right balance.”

The couple stayed true to their coastal vision, delivering precisely what the judges hoped for. “It’s a massive congratulations to them,” Marty says, lauding their standout design and cohesive style.

“It’s still my favourite house on The Block,” Darren says. Take that compliment, guys.

Ricky and Haydn went all out this week, transforming House 3’s front yard with a towering palm tree that was impossible to miss.

The judges are blown away. “Wow,’ Shaynna exclaims, capturing the collective awe. “How big is it? What a tree!” says Marty. Dave is just as impressed, adding another, “Wow. This is impressive, guys. They have certainly saved their money for this because this is not easy, by any means, to put in.”

“We told them weeks ago to run with the palm tree theme, but we never expected this. It’s beyond phenomenal,” Shaynna says. “I didn’t think they’d go that big!” she admits.

While that towering palm tree got all the attention initially, the judges couldn’t miss what Shaynna described as “the brightest, pinkest garage door we have ever seen.” You need sunnies if you’re going to look straight at it.

“It’s funny because we’ve said over and over about this house, it’s not chic, but it’s fun. This is both,” Darren says.

In the garden, Dave praises the “green on green on green”. “And they did it themselves,” Darren reminds us. “Without a landscaper, they’ve done exceptionally,” Dave admits. R and H Landscaping might actually become a legitimate business when The Block wraps up.

“The boys, how they turned around in this competition; they’re the most impressive team in terms of listening and adapting and they’ve actually built – all in all – a really appealing house in the marketplace, and I want to commend them for that,” Marty says.

And the compliments keep coming.

House 4 has been on a bumpy path, and this week is no exception.

“They came in smiling, noting you can play hopscotch on the stepping stones,” Scotty says. And Kylie is immediately unimpressed, not taking it as the compliment it was intended to be. Trouble is already brewing.

The stones are the “only things” Shaynna likes. “I felt let down by them last week and I’m thinking ‘What’s happened?’” She then lists all of the things she doesn’t like: the grass, the lights by the front door and the artwork: “If you have to put a piece of art on the outside of your building, you’re in trouble.”

The judges like the circular pavers that contrast against the angles of the house. Photo: Nine

“It feels like they’ve checked out,” Marty says. “It feels like it’s rushed; it feels like there was no money,” adds Dave. If only they knew.

Walking around to the seating area, Marty says: “If the money hasn’t been spent on the outdoor entertaining, the money hasn’t been spent on the garage, then I’m hoping to see something mind-blowing here.” Cue letdown.

Darren wryly asks, “Is that what you’re hoping for?” “Absolutely not,” Marty admits.

On a positive, the direct access from their backyard to the communal tennis court Marty calls “the biggest marketing hook for their house”.

Darren feels bad for the pair and can tell something has definitely happened that’s affected their commitment. “I look at the effort and how well things have been done … and they do things really beautifully, but they also don’t plan spaces that well – it’s perplexing.”

But he does end on a compassionate note, observing, “They deserve to end on a high … we all want them to do well.”

If Kylie’s looks could kill, we’d all be dead.

House 5 starts strong, featuring “the second largest palm tree on The Block”, a separate driveway and gated area to park a boat or caravan, a garden shed and a facade that immediately impresses the judges.

Marty says it’s “the most unique facade. It’s been a gift from the very beginning.”

The seating area and porch also get approval. “It’s just an amazing, simple Aussie porch that you can sit at and have a coffee,” Although it does need a drop ceiling to hide that plumbing, Darren says.

Upstairs, the judges point out that the balcony has to do the heavy lifting to be a real entertainer’s paradise. But it all comes back to the placement of that barbecue: is it in the right place? “No,” Marty says. All the judges would’ve preferred to see it downstairs, in the backyard by the pool.

Shaynna loves the elevation – a feature no other house offers. “I love the fact that you can be king of the castle and look over the Block and see everything that’s going on,” she enthuses and continues to list things she loves, but – as always – there’s a “but.” “I have to say, they’ve got the layout wrong,” she admits.

The judges quickly notice its limitations as they survey House 5’s balcony: they’ve tripled the dining space without adding much amenity. “If you take away all the tables and all the chairs from this balcony, what’s here? A few pots,” Marty says.

The judges still think the barbecue is in the wrong place. Photo: Nine

Despite these layout quirks, House 5’s final product is solid. Darren appreciates the consistency, stating, “They have put a lot of care and attention and time and effort into this house, and it shows.”

“The agents will love marketing this house, because it’s also different from the rest,” Marty says.

We’ll wait and see if that works in Kristian and Mimi’s favour come auction day.

That’s it. Judging done. Over to the scores for the final house reveal on season 20 of The Block.

House Team Score Place
House 1 Maddy and Charlotte 31 4th
House 2 Courtney and Grant 38 1st
House 3 Ricky and Haydn 36.5 2nd
House 4 Kylie and Brad 26 5th
House 5 Kristian and Mimi 31.5 3rd

With tools officially down on the houses, the Blockheads gather at the Phillip Island winery for one last toast to 20 seasons of drama and design – a journey that’s been equal parts grit, glamour, and good old-fashioned Block chaos.

But the final score reveal proves too much for some. Just as Scotty announces Courtney and Grant as the Mustang winners (for once, Ricky and Haydn didn’t win a major prize), Kylie storms off into the night, snapping at the film crew trailing her in an expletive-ridden tirade.

The message is clear – Kylie is done.

Now, let’s get to auction, with or without Kylie.
