It’s week 10, and with auction day fast approaching, our Blockheads are hurtling towards the finish line, frantically trying to wrap up their interiors. This week? Another gruelling guest bedroom and laundry reveal, with the usual chaos amplified by a severe tradie shortage. Seriously, “Find a tiler, save your week” could be the next mini-challenge.
Kristian and Mimi, still haunted by their tiling demons, were once again on the hunt for a tradesperson. After last week’s room-swap debacle and the judges’ scathing critique, they’re desperate for a win. But with their bedroom-turned-rumpus, it’s anyone’s guess whether this is their redemption arc or just another design disaster.
Kylie and Brad, still smarting from the judges’ brutal takedown of their “ridiculous” office and rumpus, were teetering on the edge. Tensions were sky-high, with Kylie ready to walk away from Brad and the whole ordeal. Their solution? A dramatic black-and-white makeover. Will it be their saving grace or just another design trainwreck?
Thankfully, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. A surprise visit from the Blockhead’s much-missed families offered a much-needed moral boost. Kylie, Mimi, and Courtney (sorry, Maddy and Charlotte, missed the group chat?) snuck off for a girls’ day, which quickly devolved into a boozy pina colada session. They reminisced about their newfound friendships between sips (but, thankfully, no walks in the rain) but with the competition heating up, will these bonds survive, or will the pressure tear them apart?
Meanwhile, Ricky and Haydn, fresh off their games room victory, were riding high on confidence. Taking on a second bunk room seemed like a bold move, but with their rooms finished early, they were off celebrating at the pub. However, as any Block fan knows, fortunes can change instantly. Have they nailed it, or are they about to face a harsh reality check?
With the judges’ previous disagreements still fresh in our minds, the burning question remains: Will they finally find common ground, or are we in for another round of wildly conflicting opinions?
Let’s dive into the juicy details of Week 10’s guest bedroom and laundry reveal.
Maddy and Charlotte, bless their hearts, were on an emotional rollercoaster this week. Tears flowed more freely than the grout between their (surprisingly well-laid) tiles. Honestly, it was giving “The Block: Meltdown Edition” vibes. But just when you thought they might spontaneously combust from the stress, their hidden house-flipping talents emerged. Who knew these two had tiling skills? (another well-kept secret?)
The judges, however, weren’t exactly singing their praises.
Initially smitten with the quirky elevated bed, Marty quickly changes his tune. “It should have been a little bit more open and a little bit more luxurious. It’s got function, but it doesn’t have magic; it doesn’t have that emotional pull from a marketing perspective.” In other words, it was more ‘meh’ than ‘magnificent.’
Shaynna, never one to mince words, delivers a backhanded compliment: “Design beautiful, colours are beautiful, but I wouldn’t rent this out.” Ouch.
Darren rushes to their defence. “Hang on – the craftsmanship of this bed is absolutely beautiful,” he says, highlighting the room’s hidden potential. “There is a self-contained kitchen … you’ve got your own bathroom, you’ve got your own loungeroom … what part of the market is this not hitting?!” But even his passionate plea couldn’t completely sway his fellow judges as they continue to butt heads.
“If it wasn’t for the paint and the lack of finish, this would be a 10 for me,” he declares.
Then came the laundry critique, and it was a laundry list of disappointments. “This room is unfinished,” Darren says, so that’s not a good start.
“Storage is so important within a laundry,” Marty says, pointing out the functionality flaws.
The girls got a 10 last week, but this week, Marty feels they’ve fallen off a cliff: “The shine of being on The Block has worn off. It’s one of those rooms that’ll shoot well but inspect terribly.”
Hallelujah! Courtney and Grant finally listened to the judges, and the results were nothing short of spectacular.
Marty, practically beaming with delight, can’t contain his enthusiasm. “Oh, they’ve listened; how good is this?!” The changes made all the difference: “It’s far more palatial. This is the main wing that I would personally like to sleep in in this house. What they’ve pulled together is simply superb.”
They’re even changing their tune about that polarising en suite bathroom, now dubbing it “a day spa”.
Shaynna is equally impressed, even suggesting the addition of a bar fridge and coffee machine in the office to elevate the space and tie it all together. Darren, meanwhile, is smitten with the colour palette, calling it “Beautiful”, and he gushes about every detail in the room.
Shaynna thinks they’ve totally nailed it: “No one does ‘Moditerranean’ so Courtney and Grumpy have created their own look and their own feel that is unique … it will set trends around the country, just like Steph and Gian.” Courtney can barely believe the compliment, and tears up: “I’m just so nervous,” she says.
But alas, not everything was perfect. The laundry has “room for improvement, but it’s good,” according to Darren, who has a minor bone to pick with the washer and dryer placement under the stairs and predicts seriously smacked heads.
Overall, it was a triumphant week for Courtney and Grant. “We feel really proud of what we’ve done,” Courtney says after their positive feedback.
The “House of Fun” was in full swing this week, and Ricky and Haydn did not disappoint.
“Ooh, bunk beds,” Darren exclaims as he enters the room.
“With the sofa next door, this is now 12-sleeping house, which makes it the most accommodation on The Block this year. The floor plan segmentation, this has been absolutely nailed for a holiday getaway home.” Marty declares, likely with visions of lucrative rental returns dancing in his head.
Darren can’t get over just how much the boys had levelled up. “This is a really, really well-planned, well-executed space. I like the colour palette. These drapes match the Graffico so beautifully. And in terms of amenities, this house really punches above its weight.”
“Everything about here says perfect holiday home for families. Talk about ending with a bang,” Shaynna says.
On to the second space, then?
“Now, this is a laundry!” Marty chimes, and Darren is vibing it too, “Look at this. It’s beautifully appointed. It has gorgeous floor tiles. It’s a functional space. It’s still very beautiful, and it’s absolutely appropriate.”
Shaynna thinks the laundry sink will be filled more often with ice and drinks than washing: “Can you imagine the parties they have here, because it is the ‘house of fun’, but this is also for an overflow of platters and food.”
Marty is still gushing, “Everything about this house is big. Yeah, it’s big on fun. It’s big on entertaining in the kitchen. It’s big on, I mean, the fireplace and the seating around that and in the laundry, it’s ticking every single box: bench, space, functionality, mud room, washer, dryer, tall cupboard, I mean, the list goes on.”
Clearly, the boys have created a space that works for fun-loving families, and the judges are here for it, especially Shaynna: “This is a buyer’s dream”.
After last week’s too-white rumpus room disaster, Kylie was ready to leave Brad on The Block altogether. This week, they tried to meet halfway with a black-and-white themed guest bedroom and laundry.
Walking in, Marty says: “Well, the black-and-white theme has carried.” He then notices his voice bouncing off the walls: “How’s the echo in here?” “Acoustically, this is not working,” Darren says. He does concede that the bed is “beautiful – I think that’s absolutely gorgeous.”
Shaynna loves “the wallpaper, the lights … I love the bedlinen,” but the judges think the couple came unstuck with the layout and planning. “This mezzanine has no idea what it is,” she says.
Darren acknowledges their effort, saying, “It’s well-finished, it’s clean, it’s styled. There’s a lot of care here.”
But for Marty, “Something’s not right, because how to you go from nailing some of the hardest room on The Block using such finesse and such styling details with their textures and tones and timbers and warmth … and now we’re walking into a whole mezzanine that’s wrong,” he says.
And the laundry? That wasn’t much better.
Shaynna criticises the cupboard doors covering the washer and dryer, saying, “I would take these off. Like, come on, horrible. They’ve got four kids. They know how a laundry should be functioning.
Marty is still surprised by the colour choices, saying, “They never won a room on a black-and-white theme, and yet they’re coming back to black-and-white themes after winning rooms. Why are they doing this? The obsession with black-and-white has to end.”
“Let’s hope they don’t do a chessboard outside,” Shaynna quips. “I can see it coming,” Marty groans as he puts his head in his hands.
Oh, Kristian and Mimi. These two decided to swap the rumpus room and guest bedroom last week, and the judges were not having it.
One of the things the judges noticed about the room this week is that Kristian and Mimi didn’t listen to a word they said last week.
Marty sums up the frustration: “They haven’t listened to the feedback, though, because we’re in a bedroom opposite the communal area with all of this glazing – this should have been the downstairs rumpus.”
Darren didn’t hold back either, questioning the practicality of their choices. “Wouldn’t this be a better living space than a bedroom?” he asked. Marty agreed, adding that normally, on entry to the home, you’d have a front sitting room, which is exactly what it was designed to be.
Darren sighs and concludes, “Well, I guess we can call it now: it is an error. It’s definitely a mistake.”
As a bedroom, though, Shaynna thinks it’s “absolutely stunning”. “I have to say the banana colour palettes are quite cute, like the banana and the sage green. I think it’s quite beautiful. I love the rattan – you cannot fault the look and feel of this room.”
“This house is a hard sell, and it’s because of the decisions they’ve made throughout the competition,” Marty concludes.
However, the true star of their week? The laundry. Darren was completely won over: “I didn’t know I wanted green laundry appliances before today, but yes I do,” even going as far as calling them “sexy.” And his praise doesn’t stop there: “I mean, there’s full marks here, right? Like, this is awesome. It’s beautifully finished. The colour scheme is gorgeous, and the appliances are amazing. So tick, tick, tick, tick – this is probably the laundry of the day.”
Shaynna agrees: “It is. It’s absolutely beautiful.”
Woah, what a rollercoaster of judging for Kristian and Mimi this week.
House | Team | Score | Place |
House 1 | Maddy and Charlotte | 20 | 5th |
House 2 | Courtney and Grant | 29.5 | 1st |
House 3 | Ricky and Haydn | 29 | 2nd |
House 4 | Kylie and Brad | 22.5 | 3rd |
House 5 | Kristian and Mimi | 20.5 | 4th |
Despite scoring a 10 from Shaynna, Ricky and Haydn were pipped at the post by Courtney and Grant, who snatched the win by playing their bonus point penguin. Ricky’s “spewing” about the defeat.
Meanwhile, Kylie and Brad, Maddy and Charlotte, Kristian and Mimi? Well, let’s just say their designs were less “dream home” and more “DIY disaster.” Layout blunders? Tick. Missed opportunities? Double-tick. But hey, this is The Block – where a week can change everything.
So, who’s got the blueprint for victory? It’s anyone’s guess! But one thing’s for sure: paying attention to feedback might just be the difference between building a dream … and watching it all crumble.
