The Block 2024 guest bedroom reveal recap: Teams cop a roasting

Week two on The Block delivered drama, design, and a bit of downtime that stirred up contestant dynamics. As the Blockheads tackled their guest bedroom, some nailed it while others scrambled – but not before a trip to the pub set the stage for more tension.

Kristian and Mimi, buoyed by their win in week one, joined Jesse, Paige, Courtney and Grant for a celebratory night out.

Meanwhile, Ricky, Haydn, Kylie and Brad returned early to ensure they had something resembling a room to show the judges the next day. Their frustration at their competitors’ carefree attitudes – and gymnast-like splits – was hard to plaster over, especially for Ricky and Haydn.

Tent City’s discomfort was wearing everyone down, leading Courtney and Grant to consider a hotel and Ricky and Haydn to retreat to the green room for relief.

Despite the pressure, the teams pulled off some stunning room reveals. The guest bedrooms featured bold choices and intricate designs, though not without a few missteps, which concerned the judges for two teams in particular.

As Jesse put it, this week was “a roller coaster of good times and bad times.”

Paige admitted she had no idea “how to define her style verbally” – a crucial skill when designing a house.

But last week’s underdogs quickly transformed into this week’s biggest threat.

“This just goes ‘woah, I’m here,’” declares Shaynna as she steps into House 1’s guest bedroom, with last week’s harshest critic, Marty, adding he feels so at home he just wants “to jump into the bed.”

Darren even calls it “a finished room” – high praise after last week’s bathroom debacle.

The judges are loving the striped wallpaper, calling it “phenomenal”, “stunning” and “brave”; the big duck artwork is “a terrific choice”; and the wardrobe colour is “fantastic”.

Shaynna sums it up, describing the room as “modern colonial”, and hallelujah for Jesse and Paige; they now have a defined “style”.

But they’d better make sure all their metals match – we know how Shaynna gets about matching metals! And the lack of heating and cooling didn’t go unnoticed either. However, they weren’t the only Blockheads who missed the memo that Victorian holiday homes must be ready for all four seasons – in one day.

So, have they redeemed themselves after last week’s bathroom disaster?

“This is night and day from last week,” Darren says, and Marty adds: “To see that improvement within seven days, for me, is a massive win for these guys.”

“They’ve nailed their style, and if they consistently do this look throughout, I think it’s going to be a stunning house,” says Shaynna.

If Shaynna’s awkward happy dance could talk, it would definitely say, “I love it.”

Courtney and Grant went all-in with a kids’ room that was as playful as it was polished yet could easily transform into an adult oasis – making this room suddenly very attractive to potential buyers.

The curved niche bedhead in pistachio green, green-tinged sheer curtains, cloud-like lighting, and whimsical decor add a touch of colour and fun and bring the space to life.

Marty says Courtney and Grant's kids' room can be easily converted to cater to adult guests. Photo: Nine

Marty, continuing his love affair with beds, can’t get enough of the twin children’s beds anchoring the room and can’t stop gushing, picturing his daughters playing in the room and lounging in the cozy drawing nook. He praises their attention to detail as a game-changer, declaring, “These guys will be hard to beat.”

That’s a bold early call to make, Marty. We’ll see what unfolds on auction day.

But it wasn’t all glowing reviews. Darren, while charmed by the room’s cuteness – calling it “cute as heck” – can’t overlook the lack of heating and cooling. Marty agrees, saying, “100 per cent put in a fan.” Cute room, but some climate control wouldn’t hurt.

Oh, Ricky and Haydn, where do we begin? The duo had another tough week, but not because of any surprise (baby) deliveries.

Foreman Dan was less than impressed with the standard of the plastering. Feeling defeated, Ricky and Haydn declare: “We definitely don’t feel like we’re going to win.” They know a roasting from the judges is coming.

When planning their kids’ room, Ricky claims: “No holiday house is complete without some bunk beds.”

Once again fixated on beds, Marty quickly questions, “Are they in the right spot?”

Apparently not, because Marty says the layout feels “claustrophobic and harder to photograph.”

Shaynna loves the standout wallpaper on the wardrobe, calling it “hot”. But that’s where the positives end for her. She calls out the craftmanship and design choices and says, “I was expecting more from them.”

Darren was a little more forgiving: “I like the decision with the bunks, I love the colour palette on the bunks, I don’t even mind the layout … I’d be happy with this room.” No one agrees with him.

“It’s a good room, but it’s not a great room,” Marty says, but Shaynna pipes up and says, “I don’t even think it’s a good room.” Ouch.

Roasting over, boys.

After being slammed last week for their black bathroom, it’s fair to say Kylie and Brad are a little unsure of their design direction.

Kylie didn’t want to design something that wouldn’t sell, but she also didn’t want to compromise her vision.

To appease the judges, Kylie was going to go all out in the guest bedroom and include colourful artwork and a bedhead in “Summer Peach”, but a visit from host Shelley Craft changed all that, and Kylie did a 180, going back to black, you might say.

“Oh, we have floorboards!” Shaynna exclaims, noting Kylie and Brad’s house is the only one with them and the only one that considered temperature and comfort by adding a fan. Darren agrees, saying it “makes such a difference”. But let’s move on from the fan, shall we?

Darren is unsettled by the design, feeling “this room doesn’t belong here.” Shaynna echoes that, noting that “it feels like art deco, but it’s not working because this isn’t an art deco place.”

Marty's relieved Kylie and Brad's guest bedroom 'isn’t as nightclubby' as their bathroom. Photo: Nine

Marty, going from arch enemy last week to biggest supporter this week, offers a more positive take, calls the room “palatable and marketable” and is relieved “that it isn’t as nightclubby” as last week’s bathroom.

Shaynna’s not feeling the love, stating, “this is not the look” for a holiday home. “Kylie has so much personality with her green hair … bring your energy, bring your sass,” she says.

“I don’t get the feeling that Kylie loves this style, says Darren. He’s right. “I pared it back for them,” Kylie says.

Marty is fine with their current direction, but Shaynna and Darren think they need to pivot quickly. Talk about confusing.

House 5: Kristian and Mimi guest bedroom reveal ($11,730 spend)

House 5 might have started the week riding high on the confidence of a win, but it quickly became clear that this week’s drama wasn’t about their guest bedroom design; it was all behind the scenes.

Kristian decided the rules didn’t apply to him, from forging foreman Dan’s signature to cutting corners on insulation and even sneaking some driftwood from behind a fence (okay, that one was minor, and Mimi did encourage him). He definitely earned the title of The Block bad boy of the week.

And when it comes time for judging, Mimi looks like she’s physically in pain at what criticism might come.

Marty says the room 'feels very high end'. Photo: Nine

Darren has to hip-and-shoulder the door to get in, but he does so with style. Once inside, he is initially put off by the asymmetry, calling the room “designed for design’s sake” (which, let’s be honest, is kind of the point), but admits, “it also works.” Figure that one out.

Shaynna loves the mix of textures and the asymmetry

With his usual enthusiastic arm gestures, Marty says the room “is another level. It does feel very high-end.”

Despite a hiccup with “feature” light switches in the wall panelling, they all adore the felt bedhead – especially Darren, who can’t resist stroking it, much to his own amusement as the self-proclaimed “weird creepy guy”.

Kristian and Mimi are raising the bar. Photo: Nine

Kristian and Mimi are raising the bar with their flawless execution, leaving everyone else scrambling to keep up. The judges agree, saying that while Houses 1, 2, and 5 have found their groove and know exactly who they are, Houses 3 and 4 are still figuring themselves out. Marty says Houses 3 and 4 need to “shift gears and shift now” if they want to stay in the game. Shaynna fears they are going to get left behind.

“[Kristian and Mimi] are going to be extremely hard to beat, I’m calling it early … it’s very hard to fault,” Marty says.

Week two guest bedroom scores

This week’s showdown was a repeat of last week, with House 2 and House 5 battling for the top spot. Courtney and Grant, who just missed out on the win by half a point last week, come in second place again.

  • House 1: Jesse and Paige 27 (3rd place)
  • House 2: Courtney and Grant 27.5 (2nd place)
  • House 3: Ricky and Haydn 22 (5th place)
  • House 4: Kylie and Brad 24 (4th place)
  • House 5: Kristian and Mimi 29 (1st place)

The competition is seriously heating up, with drama and design stakes rising by the minute. Will Kristian and Mimi keep their winning streak alive, or will Courtney and Grant finally break through? Or will Jesse and Paige show them all up? Maybe a good night’s sleep in a bed will help them all.
