What better way to hit the halfway mark of the series than with the kitchen – the heart and soul of every home.
During Kitchen Week, each team took on the design, functionality, and styling of this sacred space with a mix of confidence and chaos. Some nailed it, while others … well, let’s just say the risk didn’t exactly pay off. Time to wipe down the benches, stack the dishes, and brace yourself for some kitchen drama.
Last week, fresh faces Maddy and Charlotte blew everyone away with their main bedroom debut, but now it’s crunch time. Can they keep the momentum going for their all-important kitchen reveal, especially after Zak the Builder said his final goodbyes? Only time will tell …
Meanwhile, Ricky and Hayden are hanging by a thread. After not finishing two rooms, they’re still very much in the running for this week’s Chumps, and let’s be real, missing Saturday’s Safety Briefing doesn’t exactly scream, “We’re on top of this.”
Then there’s the little scandal we’ll call Gyprock-gate. Grant and Courtney got caught red-handed by Foreman Dan for stockpiling Gyprock – a massive Block no-no. Instead of taking it on the chin, they dobbed in the rest of the crew. Not cool, guys, not cool. Naturally, Dan went full warpath, launching an audit and threatening penalties for every guilty party. Safe to say, no one was too pleased about getting thrown under the bus by Grumpy.
And the question on everyone’s lips: will Kylie and Brad finally play their penguin? Stay tuned, folks – because when it comes to Kitchen Week, anything can happen.
The girls came out swinging this week, despite their builder Zak making a dramatic exit mid-week. But Maddy and Charlotte weren’t about to let that slow them down. Thanks to Jessie and Paige’s meticulous design prep, they pulled off their kitchen with only a few fixtures and styling tweaks left up for debate.
The biggest battle? Getting those taps! Delivery delays had them fighting the clock, but in a last-minute act of kitchen heroism, ABI Interiors flew the taps down from the Gold Coast, landing at 5.30am on reveal day. And boy, was it worth it.
The Block judges – Shaynna, Darren, and Marty – are full of praise, and it was an absolute WOW moment. They even tipped their hats to Jessie and Paige for selecting the Kinsman kitchen.
Marty can’t stop gushing as he steps into the luxurious space: “This is stunning. It feels so expensive.” Shaynna is equally dazzled by the benchtops, declaring, “This is the most beautiful natural stone, it almost looks like crystal. Divine!” Darren, ever the hands-on judge, notes how the scale is just right for a house this size and gives a nod of approval for skipping the butler’s pantry – a pet peeve of his from past seasons.
Marty is swooning over the whole vibe: “Buyers will be taken aback by this kitchen.” The thick stone, the elegant colour palette, the fluted glass – he loves it all, calling it a story of pure elegance.
After that early morning mercy mission, Shaynna is all about those brushed brass taps and the herringbone flooring, declaring it “Divine”. She sums it up perfectly: the girls “hit it out of the park without a doubt”. It’s another strong week from our Sydneysiders.
After their little Gyprock-gate clash, Dan and Grant kissed and made up by the end of the week, but it seems the rest of the contestants weren’t ready to forgive Grumpy for dobbing everyone else in. What’s that old saying about snitches and stitches?
Courtney and Grumpy Grant splashed a whopping $8000 on a fancy tap (basically a glorified Sodastream, right?), but their big spend left the judges divided.
Darren walked in and immediately lost his cool. “Wow. Holy s**t. Wow, this is unreal,” he exclaims, touching everything in sight like a kid in a candy store. Honestly, does someone need to give him some alone time with those “stimulating” surfaces? Shaynna is equally smitten, raving about the styling: “I’m actually salivating – it’s so rich.”
Marty’s initially wowed by the stone benchtops but quickly shifts gears. “I don’t feel this kitchen matched the level and quality and sophistication that I have seen in their other rooms,” he grumbles. Apparently, the Moditerranean vibe Courtney and Grant had been going for didn’t land this week. “They’ve missed the mark,” Marty declares, leaving no room for doubt.
It’s the Marty versus Darren and Shaynna showdown: “I could not disagree with you more,” says Shaynna. “I think you are looking at a completely different kitchen to me,” Darren says.
Darren loves the drama and impact. “I’m besotted by the colour scheme, by the materiality, by the decisions they’ve made for drama and impact,” he says, practically purring over the induction cooktop.
While Darren thinks the space is almost perfect, Marty’s having none of it. “I’ve seen this time and time again,” he says, sounding thoroughly unimpressed.
But Shaynna isn’t about to let him steal the show, shutting him down with a swift, “I don’t want to hear anymore.” Looks like Marty’s in the minority on this one!
Ricky and Haydn were so smitten with former Block contestant Duncan Miller that they whisked him off to dinner on Phillip Island and popped the big question – asking him to join their team permanently! Lucky for them, Duncan said yes, and the newlyweds got down to business.
“This is our week,” Ricky said with hopeful determination. And sure, they managed to finish the room this time (yay!), but when it came to impressing the judges … well, let’s just say the Chump title might still be in play (boo).
Walking into their coastal oasis, Darren immediately fell in love with the coastal oak finish on the Kinsman cupboards. “It works beautifully with these floors and lights – just perfect for this house,” he says, soaking in the “elevated, chic design”. The pantry gets his signature “Yum” approval.
Shaynna can’t stop gushing over the shadow lines and metal inlay detailing, while Marty praises the curved island bench as an entertainer’s dream, saying, “I love that you can easily sit nine or ten people here.” It’s ideal for those big family gatherings or friends crashing after a long day at the beach.
But just as things were looking up, the kitchen’s layout proves a real shocker.
Shaynna points out the elephant in the room: “It’s not functional,” she says, especially the placement of the appliances right in the walkway. “One of the biggest faux pas you can do when designing a kitchen,” Marty growls, claws fully extended.
Shaynna then turns attention to the styling: “We always tell people on The Block, don’t go to Instagram, don’t go to Pinterest, don’t copy; I feel like telling the boys ‘Can you start looking? Please get some inspiration.'”
She then delivers a final blow, “We always say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and this heart needs a little bit of a defibrillator.” Ouch. Someone call the paramedics – this kitchen flatlined.
Ricky and Haydn describe the feedback as “savage”.
Kylie and Brad may not have won the main bedroom last week, but they’re still on a roll, confident that this week’s kitchen would capture “Our entire style in one room.” And with dark Cosentino stone, matt-black Miele appliances, and Christian Cole tractor stools bringing the warmth, they were determined to impress. Plus, those secret Fern Spin cupboards added an extra touch of flair. But the real question remained – would it be “Tom Ford” enough for the judges?
Darren was immediately wowed. “This is moody and sexy. This is on the money,” he declares. Marty can’t help but agree. “It feels very expensive,” he says, loving the minimalist approach: “There’s only three things in here! It is so simple, yet so luxurious.” Sometimes, less really is more.
Shaynna takes it even further: “Oh my God – this is space age – this is Tom Ford meets James Bond.” Looks like we’ve got a new high bar in kitchen design!
As the judges begin to question the storage situation, they stumble upon the hidden Fern Spin cupboards, and excitement erupts. “That’s hot,” Shaynna exclaims, with Marty chiming in, “How’s that for a feature!”
But just as things seem perfect, Marty’s critical eye kicks in. “My only question, as a holiday home, is the proportions,” he says, pointing out that the seating and prep space might not be quite right.
Despite that minor hiccup, the judges agree it’s something they could tweak during Laundry Week by adding in an additional service area.
Overall, Shaynna sums it up best: “You have found your sweet spot. This is perfection.”
This week, Kristian and Mimi got a special visit from his parents and their adorable dog, Moses. The serotonin boost from family and fur-baby might have helped, but will it keep them on top of their game? That’s debatable, especially since Mimi made it clear she’s not a kitchen enthusiast: “I don’t like kitchens. I don’t like cooking. I just eat food.” Not exactly what you’d expect from a restaurant manager, right?
With the only upstairs kitchen on The Block, Mimi and Kristian created a light-filled space featuring a bold oven in “Shrek” green. But since they ordered it weeks ago, the big question is – does it still spark joy, or should they have Maree Kondo’d it?
Darren is thrilled, giving them not one, not two, but three Yums: “These guys are really in their stride. I love it.” Shaynna is right there with him, cooing, “This is stunning,” and she adores the triple shadow lines in the benchtop. But those green stools? Not matching the signature stove at all, leaving her a bit uneasy. Uh oh, could our power couple’s design choices be cracking?
Marty certainly thinks so.
He is “Unsure about the colour of these appliances and this range hood,” warning that bold design choices could backfire with buyers. “When you segregate the market in the most expensive room of your campaign, it’s risky, and I think this is a risk they shouldn’t necessarily have taken.” He also isn’t a fan of the fridge placement in the butler’s pantry, finding it too far from the sink and prep areas. “Certain elements are not quite right,” he says, fully stepping into his Disappointed Dad role for the week.
Darren, of course, doesn’t care, declaring, “I love it.”
House | Team | Score | Place |
House 1 | Maddy and Charlotte | 29 | 2nd |
House 2 | Courtney and Grant | 27 | 3rd |
House 3 | Ricky and Haydn | 23 | 5th |
House 4 | Kylie and Brad | 29.5 | 1st |
House 5 | Kristian and Mimi | 26.5 | 4th |
All in all, the judges are blown away by the stunning kitchens this week, with every room finished to a high standard. It came down to design choices, styling, and functionality. And while Marty was out for blood, his critiques focused on saleability and usefulness for these would-be holiday homes. House 1’s Maddy and Charlotte scored their first 10 of the season, cementing their status as ones to watch as we head into the final weeks of competition.
Despite Maddy and Charlotte’s 10, Brad made a bold move, playing their Penguin bonus point, dismissing the serious (and honestly, a little terrifying) threats from Kylie to sulk all week if he did (as opposed to …?), gifting them the win in this all-important week.
Mimi and Kristian had a rare miss with their bold Shrek oven choice, and the boys, Ricky and Haydn, continued to struggle with the basics.
As for Courtney and Grant, their dobbing antics might just come back to bite them.
One thing’s for sure: next week promises even more chaos, drama and dibber-dobbing.
