The Block 2024 main-bedroom en suite reveal recap: Surprise team gets a 10, another bombs

September 1, 2024

Week three on The Block was nothing short of a nail-biter.

The contestants battled time, incorrect measurements, missing tradies, waterproofing woes and their own egos, culminating in a rollercoaster of emotions that resulted in one of the season’s lowest scores so far, as well as the first perfect 10.

From booze-fuelled missteps (cheers to you, Mimi) to unfinished en suites, here’s how it all unfolded.

Jesse and Paige came out swinging after finding their design groove last week. And they actually finished a bathroom this time, a fact that wasn’t lost on the judges.

“Oh, I’m so proud of them,” Shaynna says as she steps inside and takes it all in.

Their main-bedroom en suite was the definition of sophisticated, fresh, and finished – a complete turnaround from their Week 1 bathroom debacle.

Darren was almost giddy, declaring the en suite “sophisticated, fresh and finished to perfection.” He loves this bathroom and Paige can’t believe it.  Marty agrees, noting that it “ticks all the boxes for a buyer,” while Shaynna was equally impressed, calling the room “a real show-stopper.”

She does call out the external switches, though, and Marty stresses that all contestants need to really think about their electrical work and where they are placing light switches.

Darren was very worried about their creative direction and aesthetic direction, but thinks this room is “chic and sophisticated”. “If they continue this style throughout the house, it’s going to be a really big success,” he says.

Courtney and Grant hit their stride this week, delivering a bathroom that left the judges swooning.

“Wowwwwww. Oooh, I love this so much,” Darren says. “This is insane,” adds Marty. “I want to touch everything,” says weird, creepy guy Darren who loves touching things. He can’t stop. “This is sexy,” says Shaynna.

Marty is particularly taken by their approach, stating, “They understand the balance between aesthetics and practicality. This is a room that will make people gasp.”

They’re loving the textures, the micro cement, the chequerboard-patterned tiling, the coloured stone, the travertine … it’s looking like there’s nothing they don’t love.

Eagle-eyed Shaynna does have a couple of quibbles with the room, however, calling out the external light switches and the shower entrance being too narrow. “Massive man” Darren can’t fit through without turning on his side.

It’s a minor issue, though, as Shaynna points out it can be fixed and says the room is “perfection”.

Even with these minor hiccups, they’ve delivered a show-stopping space that Marty compares to a six-star European hotel.

“Trust Marty to go six-star,” says Scotty. We like his style.

Darren says “it’s a really high point and a point of comparison for me today”.

They’ve all got a spring in their step and are hoping House 3 can “really bring it”.

“Uh oh,” says Scotty. Uh oh indeed.

House 3: Ricky and Haydn’s main en suite reveal ($13,162 spend)

Ricky and Haydn’s week was a train wreck in slow motion.

They started off confident they could nab a win with their planned en suite, but it wasn’t to be. They didn’t even have a finished room to present, thanks to a tiler who skipped town to Dubai and a builder who went off to a music festival. Not ideal.

Help is at hand when The Block legend Duncan Miller is flown in to work as the boys’ builder for the next few weeks. But it’s too little, too late for them this week.

On the way to their main en suite, the judges notice that the boys have listened to their feedback and changed the colour palette in their first bathroom, opting for white walls instead of that “juvenile” blue.

But that’s where the good news stops.

“What on earth has happened here?” asks Marty as they’re all looking around the construction site that should have been the en suite.

“It feels to me like somebody walked off halfway through,” says Darren. “I feel sick for them,”  adds Shaynna.

The judges do praise the skylight, with Darren calling it “artful and beautiful”, but the rest of the room is “diabolical”.

Scotty tries to rally them with a pep talk, but it’s clear these boys are in a deep hole. They’re looking forward to a fresh start.

House 4: Kylie and Brad’s main en suite reveal ($22,225 spend)

“I hate bathroom week,” says Kylie, and we would too if we got slammed the way she did for their all-black bathroom back in week one.

Darren loves the lighting and the fact that there’s less black, and says it’s an improvement on week one. Marty appreciates that they’re listening to the feedback from previous weeks and have stayed true to themselves without overwhelming the buyer.

They’re all loving the shou sugi ban feature wall. It’s “a big tick” for Darren, but Shaynna has mixed feelings.

“That wall is absolutely stunning, but I’m afraid, when I turn around, that I’m going to think the opposite.”

Cue doom and gloom music.

Shaynna makes a desperate plea for them to “just stop with the art deco”.

“The styling … I feel like they’ve lost themselves. What is that?” Shaynna says, as she looks down at a rather drab old mat that looks like it belongs in a university share house.

She’s “beyond nervous for them now”.

Marty disagrees and thinks they’ve made a massive step in the right direction, reassuring them that Melbourne buyers might still love their bold choices, and stresses that the home doesn’t have to be “ultra beachy for them to be successful in the market”.

Bit of mixed bag of feedback for the couple, but if there’s one thing we’ve learnt about Kylie, it’s that she’ll stick to her guns. Expect to see more black, black, black.

House 5: Kristian and Mimi’s main en suite reveal ($32,805 spend)

Mimi is gearing herself up for the judges’ feedback and looks like she might hurl. Is that nerves or the red wine she had last night?

Bigger is better, right? Hmmm, not always, and it certainly wasn’t the case for Kristian and Mimi this week with their massive main-bedroom en suite. “It almost feels too big,” Marty says.

Darren appreciates the spaciousness but can’t ignore the wasted space. “This room has so much potential, but they’ve planned it poorly and laid it out even worse,” he remarks.

“I’ve never seen such a big, useless shower” Marty says. Mimi’s dubbed it the “party shower”.

They do love the materiality, texture, timber panelling and colour, but Shaynna thinks their styling this week is “naff” and “cliche”.

Marty thinks their momentum might be slipping, suggesting that they got a little “cocky”, “arrogant” or “complacent”.

To make matters worse, they find the notes on the door full of excuses, which does not sit well with the judges. Regular Block fans will know, they hate excuses.

“This is a massive drop of the ball for the winners of the previous week,” Marty says.

Week three main en suite scores

Courtney and Grant finally snatched victory after two close calls, thanks to their luxurious and meticulously planned en suite. Jesse and Paige also had plenty to celebrate, earning the first perfect 10 of the season. Meanwhile, Ricky and Haydn hit rock bottom, and Kylie and Brad continue to struggle with consistency. As for Kristian and Mimi? They’re learning the hard way that a few bad choices can derail even the strongest contenders.

House Team Score Place
House 1 Jesse and Paige 27.5 2nd
House 2 Courtney and Grant 28 1st
House 3 Ricky and Haydn 4 5th
House 4 Kylie and Brad 23 3rd
House 5 Kristian and Mimi 21.5 4th

With the competition intensifying and nerves fraying, next week is bound to bring more unexpected turns. Will Ricky and Haydn rise from the ashes of their disaster? Can Kylie and Brad finally get their act together? Will Courtney and Grant keep riding their wave of success? And will Jesse and Paige finally address their communication issues? Tune in next week to see who dazzles and who fizzles.
