Ex-contestants on The Block Kerrie Charter and Spence Thomson have listed their sprawling 17-hectare farm in South Australia’s Barossa Valley for sale.

The nurse and carpenter appeared on the 2018 series of the show renovating The Gatwick in St Kilda. They were runners-up to underdogs Hayden and Sara, pocketing $415,000 in prize money.

The home – complete with four fenced paddocks, veggie patches and chicken coop – was purchased by the pair in 2015 through friends of friends. Charter and Thomson used the property to run a bed and breakfast called The Paddocks for 18 months but have since settled down to reside there.

“Because it’s a 40-acre property right in the golden circle of the valley floor in Barossa, they don’t come up that often,” Thomson said.

“We have been holidaying in the Barossa since 2011. We started looking at property and this one came up.”

The farm adjoins Maggie Beer’s iconic Farm Shop and Cafe with some of the area’s best wineries in its vicinity. Nuriootpa is located about an hour’s drive north-west of the Adelaide CBD and the property is only minutes from the freeway.

The main residence is a four-bedroom, three-bathroom villa with leadlight windows, underground cellar, two wood-burning fireplaces and several kitchenettes.

The wraparound verandah and outdoor entertaining areas are highlights, sporting vineyard views and established gardens.

“There are so many beautiful, mature trees here. We get all these types of parrots and birds. Sitting outside, having a wine and listening to the birds and having the horse right at the fence – it’s really peaceful,” Charter said.

Barossa’s thriving tourism industry makes the property an appealing opportunity for investors. There is also potential to section off parts of the main building into separate wings and create guest accommodation.

Thomson says the living space and distance from the city makes it ideal for tree-changers from Adelaide and Melbourne without losing the convenience of city living.

“When everyone else has had to lockdown in the home, we’ve been business as usual on the property. We’ve been able to walk around and we’ve got sheep and chickens. It sort of looks after itself – we don’t have to do much,” he said.

“From a lifestyle point of view, it really is the best of the best here. We love our food and wine, and the people are fantastic.”

Charter and Thomson are selling up to move closer to family in Victoria. They have purchased 48 hectares of land in Mia Mia near Heathcote where they will put their old Block skills to use to build their new sustainable home.

The listing is advertised with a guide of $1.35 million to $1.425 million with South Australia Sotheby’s International Realty fielding inquiries.
