Given the ongoing rush of people looking to escape the city permanently, often the same question arises – do I live by the ocean or among the trees?

But when you do your homework, you may just come across an extra special place that offers both.

A place where you can have your country cake, and go to the beach, too.

Hidden hinterland gem

A noteworthy example of such enticement can be found in Tyagarah, a quiet hamlet, straddling the coast and the countryside.

First National Byron director Su Reynolds says the town offers an eclectic mix of small and large rural properties mixed in with luxurious estates.

“With such elevation, many properties enjoy sweeping views, such as the coastal scenes over Julian Rocks and onto Cape Byron to the east, and outlooks to Mount Chincogan and the majestic Wollumbin to the north,” says Reynolds.

Tyagarah’s demographic varies from generational farming families and new residents, many of whom have moved to the area in recent years, particularly since the first COVID lockdown, as well as holiday homes nestled privately among the hills.

“New locals to the Tyagarah area revel in its natural beauty, but also in its nearby attractions, from the Tyagarah Airfield that welcomes small private aircraft and opportunities for aerial adventures such as skydiving, to the Byron Bay Bluesfest, held at the Byron Events Farm. And for those that need a city fix, the M1 Motorway is easily accessed for a quick trip to the Gold Coast Airport,” says Reynolds.

With the property market in places like Tyagarah continuing to enjoy strong capital growth, Reynolds predicts that demand will continue to rise.

“In this changing world, many buyers’ dream of having more space around them, the ability to grow their own veggies, and having clean air and freedom to enjoy their surroundings without being too isolated. Tyagarah certainly offers this,” she says.

All roads lead to paradise

While life in the hinterland of Tyagarah grants is a peaceful paradise, an abundance of lifestyle pursuits and city-like conveniences are all but a short drive away.

And not the bumper-to-bumper type, but rather the meandering past rolling hills and rainforests type, with not a set of traffic lights in sight.

A scenic drive 15-minutes south will have you stumble upon Bangalow; a charming, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town that packs a punch, beloved for its main street speckled with stores and cafes and the monthly Bangalow Markets.

Or, venture eight minutes north to Brunswick Heads.

This laid-back coastal town with a village atmosphere is home to Brunswick River and Torakina Beach, as well as the award-winning restaurant, Fleet.

And of course, you can always head 15 minutes east, which will see you arrive in Byron Bay.

The brimming seaside town is a destination for world-famous beaches, boutique brands, and popular venues such as The Farm Byron Bay and Raes on Wategos.

A mere 10-minute drive from Tyagarah the luxury interiors and lifestyle brand, Tigmi Trading, share’s the region’s relaxed sensibilities, while being very much a global brand with global collections.

“Like most, I had been travelling to the area for many years from Sydney, but I finally made the move permanently over 10 years ago now, and haven’t looked back,” says Tigmi’s founder and creative director,  Danielle McEwan.

While there’s so much focus on Byron Bay itself, McEwan notes that small hinterland towns scattered across the shire, like Tyagarah, are what make the Northern Rivers a beautiful and unique place to live.

“More than ever, there are many people who are interested in moving to the Byron hinterland, to lead that creative lifestyle, be surrounded by pristine nature, and find a real sense of community – just as I have.”
