The city crowned with the most beautiful homes in the world

Global travel restrictions have meant many housebound travellers are reminiscing on their pre-pandemic adventures and all the beauty international journeys expose us to, from different cultures to different architecture.

Now the most beautiful homes have been ranked in a survey conducted by housing website homedit.com, after thousands of people voted, during lockdown, for the city or region that boasts the most beautiful residential properties.

1. Birgu, Malta

Birgu, Malta topped the list, voted the city with the most beautiful houses. Birgu’s origins date back to medieval times, and it is considered the oldest out of the Three Cities of Malta that sit across from the Old Harbour.

2. Bibury, England

Birbury, England was considered home to the second-most beautiful houses in the world. The town is a typical Cotswolds village, known for its honey-coloured, 17th-century stone cottages.

3. Tuscany, Italy

The homes dotted around the famous Italian region of Tuscany were voted the world’s third most beautiful. The region is best known for its landscapes, wine and art.

4. Ghent, Belgium

Tuscany was followed by Ghent, Belgium with 70 per cent of respondents voting for the city’s 15th-century architecture as some of the most pleasing to the eye.

5. Visby, Sweden

Visby, Sweden placed as the fifth city with the most beautiful homes. The medieval city is located on the island of Gotland, south of Stockholm, and has been a UNESCO heritage-listed site since 1995.

6. Mykonos, Greece

The iconic maze of white and blue homes of the Greek island of Mykonos placed sixth on the list. The picturesque Cycladic architecture means the thick, white-coloured walls offer protection from extreme heat and strong winds.

7. London, England

London has a range of architectural styles that have influenced homes around the world from Victorian terraces to Gregorian townhouses.

8. San Francisco, US

San Francisco’s “Painted Ladies” might be some of the world’s most photographed houses. With their pop of flamboyant colours, they are the epitome of the city’s Victorian architecture.

9. Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena was home to one of the most important ports of the Spanish Empire so it is no surprise, then, that it boasted some of the best instances of Spanish Colonial architecture in its houses. Many of them are preserved to this day.

10. Colmar, France

These half-timbered houses in Colmar were built between the late 15th century and the early 19th century, spanning more than 300 years of tradition. This type of architecture was common in north-eastern France.
