Holiday options could be largely limited to our shores again this summer, as the pandemic casts doubt over the reopening of international travel.
But with more than 25,000 kilometres of coastline, Australians are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a home by the seaside.
In these coastal towns, you can buy a holiday house by the beach for less than $1 million before Christmas.
NSW
About four hours’ drive from Sydney, Port Macquarie has attracted buyers from the NSW capital and further afield.
This charming three-bedroom house at 13 Florida Street is going to auction on 25 September with a price guide in the high $600,000s to early $700,000s.
The property is within walking distance of at least three beaches and is close to the town centre, Elders Real Estate Port Macquarie’s Alison Sheppard said.
She said she had been inundated with inquiries from all over the world, including a virtual inspection with Australian expats in India.
“We’ve had to take a real international approach because there are so many Australians overseas,” she said, adding that interested buyers were a mix of owner-occupiers and investors who are interested in turning the home into a part-time holiday rental.
Victoria
Plenty of young families from locked-down Melbourne have shown interest in a quaint three-bedroom home in the coastal town of Inverloch, about two hours’ drive from Victoria’s capital.
Priced at $750,000, the home is close to beaches, parks and schools, which is a major drawcard for anyone looking for a more permanent move, said Marni Lee Redmond of Alex Scott & Staff Inverloch.
“Ten years ago, we didn’t have the childminding facilities, and that stopped families moving here,” Ms Redmond said.
“Our main buyer activity is from young families wanting to move out of Melbourne, wanting to do a sea change and get into the Inverloch way of life.”
Queensland
A mixed bag of buyers has shown a lot of interest in getting into the Sunshine State, with many homes taken off the market within days of being listed.
This four-bedroom house on the Sunshine Coast has already attracted one pre-registration from a Brisbanite looking to relocate to the area permanently.
Ray White Caloundra’s Natascha Drexel-Munro said the property was scheduled to go to auction on Thursday with interstate buyers vying for the keys, too.
She highlighted its central location close to the local hospital, the highway to Brisbane and a strip of beaches.
Western Australia
Buyers will not be hard-pressed to find plenty of homes along Perth’s coast for less than a million dollars, but it is a matter of snapping them up in time, with plenty of competition in the market.
This four-bedroom house at 12 Francois Lane in Coogee, a southern coastal suburb of the capital, has a price guide of $799,000.
Carlin Team’s Tom Carlin said mainly locals have expressed interest in the property so far, but interstate investors are an active group of buyers in WA at the moment.
He said there were seven offers from interstate on one property alone, with many looking to move in once borders reopen.
“It would make an amazing holiday home,” he said. “Something like this represents good value, with the rental return at about $750 to $800 a week.”
