At just over three metres wide the “Spite House” in Boston, Massachusetts, is a local legend.
Currently listed for $US1.2 million ($A1.63 million), 44 Hull Street bears its name for all to see on the facade.
It is said, according to Wikipedia, that the block of land was inherited by two brothers. While one was away, serving in the American Civil War, the other built a home on the land with the hopes there would not be enough space for a second dwelling for his sibling.
In order to get back at his brother, it is believed that the returning sibling built the Spite House to block out the sunlight of the adjoining property.
There is another theory as to the history of this home, that it was simply built out of a regular neighbourly dispute back in 1874. Local archives say the land was split into five lots in 1884.
On offer for the new tenants are two bedrooms, one bathroom and 108 square metres of space, set across four levels.
There is also a rooftop terrace with some seriously good views, ideal for those wanting to look down on those around them from their tower of spite.
