You’ll never need to leave your bed again with this Japanese innovation.

It combines your bed, lounge seating and table into one incredibly cosy piece of furniture.

The kotatsu is a table with an electric heater underneath and a heavy blanket on top to trap the warmth.

The kotatsu started with charcoal and hearths in the 14th century. However, the modern ones have been given a designer twist and, thankfully, use electric heaters instead of charcoal.

The original kotatsu could heat the entire body, as the warmth would enter through the traditional Japanese robes and travel up to the neck.

It’s designed for cold climates and houses that lack good insulation: your ears can be freezing but it doesn’t matter if the rest of your body is warm.

Not only is it great for individuals but it allows families to gather to cook and share a meal or watch television.

One does have to bear in mind the heater and try not to wear flammable clothing.

For this reason, it’s a bed that’s not designed to be slept in at night.

The kotatsu is available online from Belle Maison but DIY ones are simple to make.
