The house in the film The Money Pit, starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, is for sale and it’s a far cry from the disastrous home that nearly broke up a marriage.

The Long Island property featured in the 1986 movie that tests the on-screen couple in every way as they jump through all the hoops in the hope of renovating their dream home.

The film is nothing short of hilarious as they soon discover through broken taps, shoddy stairs and faulty electrical work their bargain house purchase was a total dud.

But the 23-room mansion is now up for sale in reality and the New York residence is nothing short of amazing in real life.

The sprawling 1300 square metre home property oozes country elegance, boasting seven large ensuite bedrooms and a four-room master suite. It also has an eat-in kitchen, eight fireplaces, large formal rooms and a swimming pool complete with its own cabana.

Originally built in 1898, and known as Northway estate, the house has been meticulously renovated for the past four years with designers, decorators and contractors paying attention to every corner.

The result is spectacular –  the ebony floors gleam throughout the house and there are elaborate touches in every room.

It’s listed for $7,385,030 through Daniel Gale Sotheby’s, according to a real estate website.
