The most expensive house in US history is set to hit the market and – no word of a lie – it will be asking $750 million.
The 9290-square-metre home in Bel Air, California, is nicknamed “The One” and gives new meaning to the word opulent.
Perched on top of a hill in a 1.6-hectare gated estate that boasts 360-degree views of southern California, it has the usual luxury house stuff – loads of bedrooms (there’s 18), many bathrooms (OK, maybe 25 is exceptional), a library, tennis court and gym.
But this place is more like a postcode than a single address. Everything is on a scale so massive, it could house the entire population of a country town quite comfortably, even allowing for everyone to party together or separately every night of the week.
There are four swimming pools, a bowling alley and a nightclub – and there’s a 20-car garage so no one has to park on the street like a peasant.
The listing of The One has been highly anticipated in the US, with the property seven years in the making.
No building process is without its ups and downs and The One has been no exception – movie producer-turned-developer Nile Niami has faced permitting problems, construction delays and financing issues, according to Bloomberg.
Now, nearing the end, Niami has said he will still list for $US500 million ($750 million) which, if it sells for the asking price, would leave Australia’s $149 million property record for dead.
Only two weeks ago, Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos splashed out on the most expensive house in California’s history, dropping a cool $US165 million ($245.6 million) on a Beverly Hills mansion.
But that’s small change compared to Niami’s mansion, which has a theatre with enough seats to be your local cinema, a spa with a steam room and a jacuzzi. There is also a three-bedroom guest house which – you guessed it – comes with its own spa and pool.
It’s expected to hit the market in the coming weeks but for a sneak preview, check out the promotional video.
