Salus: The Gungahlin community with connection at its core

When I was younger, neighbourhood reigned supreme. We would have yearly Christmas street parties at the end of our cul-de-sac. We’d play street cricket with kids in nearby houses and knew everyone by name.

When neighbours went on holidays, we’d feed their pets, and put their bins out on a Sunday evening so it looked like they were still home.

As I got older and moved into my own places, those neighbourly relationships slowly diminished. I’d rather Uber Eats a carton of milk for $5, plus the $10 delivery fee, than run across to my neighbour’s place to ask for some, and the only acknowledgement we’d give each other was an awkward wave if we accidentally locked eyes.

Speaking to friends, I know I’m not the only one who experienced this.

That was until more recently, when we were made to stay at home for months on end while the COVID-19 wave washed through. We were forced to get to know our neighbours better on daily outdoor walks around the block or at the local oval as we flocked there to give our dogs a run around in the afternoon.

This change to our way of life reminded us of the importance of fostering relationships with our surrounding community.

Salus is a development of 35 well-proportioned two, three and four-bedroom homes that positions community at its core.

It’s a place where like-minded people will come together to create community-oriented living. One where children will grow up together playing at the many nearby parks and green spaces, and parents will host weekly dinner gatherings at each other’s homes.

And if you’re in need of a cup of sugar for a batch of muffins, you’ll have no hesitation knocking on your neighbour’s door.

The homes are expected to appeal to young couples and families. Photo: Supplied

“The target market includes young couples looking to get into the housing market for the first time, while the larger ones are garnering interest from couples into their 30s with young children or children on the way, who are planning on raising their family in their new home,” says Matt Shipard of Hive Property.

“These will also gain considerable interest from anyone who has purchased in the greater Gungahlin area in the past four to five years, benefiting from capital growth in the area, and is now looking to upsize.”

To the north are options that range from around 150 to 160 square metres of living – a great size for anyone looking to upsize without jumping to a free-standing home.

“The way they are oriented on the sloping block also allows for every home to be filled with natural light,” aided by light wells, Shipard says.

“The first row of units has immediate access onto Moncrieff Park, which is one of the busiest in Gungahlin. Whether you’re two or 40 years old there is something to do, like kick a footy around or play basketball with mates.

“The units at the rear have green-space views or views across the reserve where it splits off into Taylor, which are just beautiful.”

The project is expected to be completed in early 2025.
