The newest luxury housing trend is an airport in your backyard

Sick of traffic jams? These wealthy homeowners are commuting to work by air.

Residential airparks are growing increasingly popular in wealthy pockets of the US.

These are communities organised around airports, with deeded access between houses and the runway.

For those lucky enough to own a private plane, airparks allow you to park an aircraft in a private hangar right beside your house.

You can be out the door and up in the sky within a matter of minutes.

Airparks have the potential to transform isolated rural towns into satellite suburbs of major cities.

In America, properties near airparks come at a price. According to the New York Post, home listings with keywords related to airparks are, on average, 30 per cent more expensive than comparable properties.

But not all airpark homes are so costly. In Queensland, you can buy a property in the Whitsunday Aviation Village Estate for less than $350,000.

Located in Flametree just over the hill from Airlie Beach, the airpark is made up of 57 residential lots and 30 commercial sites, organised around a central runway.

It’s one of several airparks that have popped up around Australia in recent years. In the regional NSW town of Wentworth is Twin Rivers Airpark, where empty lots sell for around $220,000.

Meanwhile, Cumulus Airpark in Gympie, Queensland has around 18 lots for passionate plane-owners, with more set to come to market in early 2025.

And for those concerned about the noise, Cumulus Airpark resident Nigel Pilkington says life near the airstrip is surprisingly quiet.

“It’s not like Brisbane airport with lots of traffic. Light aircraft are quiet so you actually have to watch what you’re doing on the runway because you don’t hear them coming.”

“It’s not like living at an airport, we live at a recreational airstrip so it’s much quieter,” he previously told Domain
