Johnny Rose yelled that he was “selling the place” almost immediately after arriving at the derelict motel in Schitt’s Creek, but now the iconic Rosebud Motel from the cult-classic TV show is actually up for grabs.

For $2.08 million ($C2 million), the famed and actually rather charming property could be yours, sans the dodgy plumbing and a furious Johnny Rose in his Ebenezer Scrooge nightgown.

Its real name is the Hockley Motel, and it’s located around 88 kilometres north of Toronto in Canada. The property served as a major location for the multi-award-winning Canadian TV series – which ended last year after six seasons – and includes a 400-square-metre building and 2.7 hectares of land.

While the motel is instantly recognisable as the Rose family’s Schitts Creek home, in reality, the interiors are actually bright and spacious, with the property listing revealing open-plan living and neutral tones.

And, unlike the nine-room motel on the TV show, the real Rosebud Motel is actually made up of 10 rooms, including a two-storey manager’s suite and separate one-bedroom cottage, as well as a three-stall horse barn.

The dusty-looking car park is there but the rest of the motel’s surroundings are quite beautiful and not the dumping ground they’re made out to be on the show; it’s actually set by the Nottawasaga River, a highly desirable fishing river for rainbow trout and salmon, the listing says.

While the motel is not currently operational, there are hopes that its iconic links to Schitt’s Creek will be honoured by whoever buys it.

Current owner Jesse Tipping, who reportedly bought the hotel in 2012 for $820,000, told CTV News that the purchasers may turn it into a Schitt’s Creek-themed boutique motel.

“The property itself is so beautiful,” he said. “It’s very pretty and it’s an incredible spot and the motel itself has had a great history in the community. I hope that somebody who buys it honours that history and is able to keep it going.”

And Schitt’s Creek is not the property’s only claim to fame. According to Tyla, it has also featured in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, with assassins Hazel and Agnes seeking refuge at the motel.

The property has been up for sale since last year.
