Houses in the suburb of Hawker in Canberra’s Belconnen district are on the move with properties being snapped up at auction.
They included a well-presented character-filled residence at 26 Moroak Street, which sold under the hammer last weekend for $1.47 million.
Blackshaw Woden agent Belinda Riding said the five-bedroom property appealed to a family relocating from out of town to be closer to schools and other amenities.
“They were drawn to the large block and country ambience of the home,” she said.
“The 1970s property offers a lot of space and is in exceptional condition with parquetry floors and a hardwood country kitchen, which was similar to the new owner’s other home.”
Set on a sprawling 1260-square-metre parcel of land, the expansive residence was extended in the 1980s, adding a substantial second living room and a fifth bedroom with an en suite.
Located just minutes from Hawker Shopping Centre, the Pinnacle Nature Reserve and walking trails, Belconnen Fresh Food Markets and Westfield Shopping Centre, every necessity is conveniently within reach.
The Hawker sale contributed to last Saturday’s clearance rate of 56 per cent from 50 reported auctions, according to Domain data.
Riding said the suburb is typically tightly held, but there has been an uptick in sales in recent weeks.
Nearby, a four-bedroom home at 16 Moroak Street recently sold for $1.25 million, while another four-bedroom home at 104 Murranji Street was sold prior to auction by Michael Braddon of Blackshaw Gungahlin for $1.127 million.
Median house prices in the Belconnen region increased by 0.4 per cent over the past quarter to reach $864,500.
The suburb record for Hawker is $2.98 million, for a five-bedroom home at 8 Marrakai Street that sold in October 2023.
