Forrest

The home at 9 Tennyson Crescent hits the Canberra property trifecta.

It was designed by the “father of Canberra architecture”, Ken Oliphant; it sits on an enormous 3500-square-metre parcel of land; and it is in arguably the most prestigious suburb in the region.

Darlington hasn’t passed through many hands since it was built in the late 1920s. The current owners are the fourth and this is the first time it has been listed for sale in 20 years.

The home is characterised by its historic roots. In a 1931 feature in Home Beautiful magazine, the home was described as a “fine residence”, with a “simple and dignified design” that makes the most of the views of the surrounding hills from the verandah and terrace.

The residence still echoes an era of refined living with polished hardwood floors, intricate timber panelling and grand fireplaces.

While it has since been renovated, Darlington maintains details that tell its story as a residence built for a prominent local dentist.

Ornate mantles, stunning French doors, double-hung windows and battened ceilings will transport you back in time.

Even more dreamy are the grounds made up of rolling lawns, established plantings, hundreds of bulbs and flowering shrubs, and a 100-year-old magnolia tree.

Features like the in-ground pool, home cinema, updated kitchen and porcelain-tiled bathrooms are much-loved modern luxuries.

Added in the 1970s is a fully self-contained three-bedroom cottage – with en suite – to the rear of the home, which provides a retreat for visitors or extended families.

Sitting on a large 911-square-metre block, the home has been fully renovated in recent years but retains its period charm.

The kitchen, which is open to the lounge and dining room, boasts an island bench, pendant lights and feature handles on the cabinetry, while the main bathroom features a monochromatic palette with black cabinets, white wall tiles and black-and-white patterned floor tiles.
