The cheapest suburb or town in the nation to buy a home in is so extraordinary, Hollywood has been known to come knocking.

It’s far from glitzy, but that is what makes Coober Pedy so special.

An outback opal mining town, about 900km north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway, Coober Pedy clocks in with Australia’s least expensive median house price.

It holds that title by a long shot, with a median that is less than the price of a luxury car -$91,250.

Film buffs will know its Mars-like landscape as the setting for the 1985 Aussie movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and a dozen other films through the years.

The next cheapest place to buy property in Australia is Collinsville in Queensland’s Whitsundays region, Domain’s latest House Price Report shows.

Collinsville is inland, so you don’t get the ocean-view glamour, but with farmland, orchards, wildlife and mining heritage, has a strong identity and tourism attractions.

There, the median house price is $165,000.

Even with its affordable entry price, Collinsville’s housing has still risen in price by 5.2 per cent over 12 months, the fresh Domain figures reveal.

The top ten have medians that are less than a third of the regional national median house price of $645,706.

Broken Hill, which snuck into the top ten and is New South Wales’ only entry, has soared to the tune of 14.8 per cent growth over the year to December.

The mining city, in the state’s far north west, gained the nickname Silver City for its wealthy deposit of silver, lead and zinc.
