From the real estate listing images, this property looks like any other ordinary five-bedroom, six-bathroom family home you might see.

Except that it’s far from ordinary.

Those looking to hunker down to ride out any sort of global catastrophe can do so in this 1393-square-metre concrete and steel bunker, eight metres below ground.

The 1970s-style home, not far from the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip, sits on 464 square metres inside the bunker and features all of life’s luxuries that you’d find above ground.

The bunker, completed in 1978, was the vision of entrepreneur and Avon Cosmetics director Girard Henderson who was fearful of a nuclear attack during the Cold War.

It was kitted out with a pool with rockery and waterfall, a spa, fountain, a separate guest house, an entertaining area with barbecue, a bar, billiards room, and a dancefloor complete with disco ball.

You’d never know you were almost eight metres underground with the bunker made to look like the natural environment.

There are floor-to-ceiling murals of mountains, forests, and lakes and light settings to simulate the sunrise, daytime, and sunset, as well as steel support beams disguised as trees, lights to evoke a sparkling night sky, and green grass carpet and a sky-blue painted ceiling.

Inside, the home is a ’70s-style time warp with the current owners aiming to preserve the look and feel of the era. Think lots of brown, yellow and orange, plush carpets and velvet. Fans of blush pink will love the highlights in the kitchen and bathroom.

But the price of relative safety and peace of mind doesn’t come cheap – the unique property, listed with Stephan LaForge of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, has a price guide of US$18 million ($27.5 million). Included in the price is one year of caretaking plus all of the furnishings.

“$18 million sounds crazy based on previous sales costs,” LaForge told Money.com, “but if you were going to build one today, think about digging the hole and waterproofing the concrete.

“There’s been a lot of interest in the sense that people want to look at it,” LaForge added. “It’s like an attraction, like going to Disneyland.”
