Possibly one of the more successful advertising campaigns in recent years has been branding our near cross-border neighbours as “Googonians”.
This label almost immediately became common usage and offered a sense of identity to those who chose and have continued to live the Googong lifestyle.
Can you believe it’s already been going 10 years with another decade of growth to look forward to?
There’s a lot to like about this thriving township just 28 minutes south-east of the Canberra CBD – about the same distance as it is from Greenway.
For comparison, it takes about the same time to get from the CBD to the Gungahlin town centre in the north.
That makes Googong a very viable option for those looking for value for money. It has a country vibe with lush landscapes and mountain views.
There’s some good news for those who might like to check out just what the Googong lifestyle offers, with the opening of the biggest display home village in the region.
The Edward Drive showcase includes 15 homes from 12 builders, each packed with the latest features in contemporary home living.
Googong township executive Glen Frew says the village offers potential buyers a kind of one-stop-shop.
“There’s a tremendous variety of styles from our leading builders that have been designed to sit easily within the context of Googong,” he says.
“There are homes with a laid-back country vibe through to the dramatic entertainer homes, but all house designs focus on encouraging interaction with neighbours.”
The single and two-storey designs offer four bedrooms, two bathrooms and double garages, with some of the bigger footprint homes offering as many as 4.5 bathrooms.
The living areas range from 251 square metres to 398 square metres.
“There’s definitely a design for everyone depending on their needs,” Frew says.
“The single-level homes might suit a very young family or a downsizer, while the bigger, two-storey homes will meet the needs of a larger family.”
The designs provide plenty of choice in how spaces might be used and include multiple living areas, studies, walk-in wardrobes, butler’s pantries, outdoor kitchen options and more.
“Since the pandemic, people have certainly paid more attention to their needs in terms of space and give plenty of priority to work-from-home and entertaining areas,” Frew says.
“A display village like this is a great way for people to get a feel for contemporary design and to really confirm what they need and want in a home.”
It’s also a great first step in trying on the image of becoming a new “Googonian”.
And you can mull the benefits of that over a coffee at the Lucy and Layla Homewares pop-up in the village.
