Like countless others, Canberran Jess Smith came to a point in her career where she was looking for a change.
In a move that would harness her energy, negotiating skills, local knowledge and passion for her community, she entered the Canberra real estate industry in 2011 and hasn’t looked back.
Today, as principal and head of sales at Stone Gungahlin, Smith is committed to “doing whatever it takes” to achieve exceptional results and an outstanding experience for her clients.
Her hands-on sales leadership has not only earnt her a number of local accolades, including REIACT residential sales agent of the year 2022, but is also empowering other women to thrive in their real estate careers.
In recognising female achievements across Canberra’s property sector for International Women’s Day on March 8, Allhomes sat down with Smith to chat about her journey and the value of female mentorship for the next generation of women in the industry.
How has your time in real estate been so far?
My journey in real estate has been incredible. From the first moment, I absolutely fell in love. Thirteen years later, I’m still just as happy as I was on day one!
I have been fortunate to work alongside some of the best agents at two amazing companies. I have also been privileged to train and develop some of the most talented agents in Canberra, and having the opportunity to open our own agency was a dream come true.
What are the goals and milestones you have set yourself?
We had set a goal for our business to be the leading agency in Gungahlin and it has been a privilege building a team around us to help us achieve this goal.
What do you want to see change regarding female representation in the industry?
I would love to see females shift their mindset around what is possible in this industry. Many women may be intimidated by what they think this industry could entail or what they think they can achieve. Females themselves need to get rid of the ceiling.
Have you had to face any challenges, given your gender?
I’ve had absolutely no challenges being a female in real estate. If anything, I think it is an incredible strength.
What are your thoughts on the importance of female leadership, mentors and role models?
I believe they are absolutely important for the industry. We are a female-led agency in both sales and property management, and we focus on providing ongoing mentorship to all of our staff. We want to ensure we’re there to support them in their business and personal journeys.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
It is a fantastic day to celebrate women’s achievements and continue to educate and raise awareness about women’s equality. As a principal, senior sales agent and mentor to our team, I hope I can continue to help young individuals to have a career in real estate.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I’m most proud of the current team we have developed at Stone Gungahlin. We have an office full of young, dynamic individuals who are extremely talented and we have built a fantastic culture. It’s something we are all very proud of.
What is your advice to the next generation of wonderful women thinking about real estate as a career path?
Back yourself! You’ve got this, girls!
