A property known as The Narrow House in Washington DC is up for sale for USD $3.5 million ($5 million) and has promptly gone viral, but not for its slender footprint or unique building design.
Built by internationally acclaimed architect Dr J Darvish for himself and his family, it’s actually a bold interior choice that has sent tongues wagging online.
“Delight your eyes,” instructs the listing, a sentiment that swiftly underwent debate on popular Twitter account Zillow Gone Wild.
The three-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home might be narrow by US standards, but is the size of a row house, otherwise known as a terrace or town house.
Inside, angles and curves that cocoon the hallway create visual interest, along with vaulted ceilings in the living and dining areas.
A spectacular spiral staircase becomes the main architectural feature on the main floor, closely followed by a charming glass sitting room at the rear.
Then things start to get a little quirky. In the kitchen, Twitter users point out that there are almost too many options for stove tops within the space.
The black kitchen also provides a hint to what lies deeper within the home – splashes of red punctuate the area, from light switch coverings to a banquette with red racing car stripes.
But take a stroll into any of the multiple bathrooms to be met with reflective and heavily-mirrored spaces saturated in the bold headache-inducing hue.
“Imagine coming back home drunk and just trying to wash your face and finding yourself in this nightmare,” one user commented on photos of the main bathroom.
“That bathroom is HIDEOUS,” another remarked, while a third labelled the bathrooms as “vomit inducing.”
Outside, there’s an attached garage with custom designed door (also red) and additional parking in front.
The listing explains that there is opportunity to design the backyard by adding a pool or a gazebo.
