A vast 52,000-square-metre property in Carthage, Missouri, is being sold with not one but two massive Victorian mansions built right next to each other.
Priced at $4.3 million, the dual residences almost seem like good value compared to what 4.3 big ones will buy you in Sydney or Melbourne.
But the dual-home arrangement of this real estate listing is only half the story.
The fascinating thing about this property is the two homes’ relationship with one another.
To say that both mansions are intertwined is a statement of fact, because beneath the two dwellings is a massive interconnecting underground tunnel big enough to make a doomsday prepper weak at the knees.
We’re not sure why the current owners have done this (wouldn’t it be easier to walk between homes on the manicured lawn?), but the subterranean walkway is just the tip of an eccentric iceberg.
Other very odd features of both homes are an almost overwhelming level of exposed brick, stone, wood and OTT ornamentation.
There’s also a weird, bell-shaped chapel on the property that can probably best be described as slightly worrying.
Inside the peculiar structure is a large, eldritch-looking throne that’s been hewn from a giant tree trunk, which still sits on the exposed earth beneath it.
Other aberrant features include a safe the size of a walk-in robe, a dining room that looks like a set from Game of Thrones, and seemingly endless amounts of stained glass windows and skylights.
We’re not exactly sure who will buy this property, but for the individual that does, hats off to you – it truly is a unique offering.
