When you picture your perfect world and dream home, what do you envisage?

For me it’s a minimalist gallery-style build, polished concrete floors that stretch the entire breadth of the home, matt black light fittings illuminating abstract artworks down the extra-wide corridor, grand open spaces and endless glass with maple tree views.

Every now and then a new home comes onto the market in Canberra that fine-tunes that vision and in a job like mine it happens more often than not, so ask me next week and I’d probably list the features of a quaint country-style cottage instead, similar to the Bungendore home listed below.

But for this week, it’s the light-filled Turner apartment with a larger-than-life void and the bathroom of our dreams that’s left an impression on me, and no doubt to the buyers visiting its Saturday open showing.

Keep reading on and you’ll also find a few more of the very best homes on the market in Canberra and the surrounding region.

Bungendore

A main residence and a separate cottage make up this heritage, award-winning home known as Thornleigh.

The 1880s house has been beautifully restored with the added bonus of a seamless – and extremely clever – extension. The end result is one that blends Victorian grandeur with meticulous contemporary design, surrounded by manicured gardens.

Walking through each room will transport you back in time, with stained glass windows, original Baltic pine floorboards, ornate cornice detail, colonial brickwork and the original working fireplace.

21 Forster Street, Bungendore

A custom spiral staircase takes you from the mezzanine to your very own turret – an ever-so-peaceful place to spend long afternoons with a cool drink in hand.

The separate cottage offers the opportunity for additional income or extra accommodation with two living areas, two bedrooms and a large timber kitchen.
