A Tasmanian home for sale has a very unlikely find in the formal lounge room.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom, Federation-style property at 10 Marine Street in East Devonport has a trap door in the main living zone that leads to a hidden cellar.

As stated on the listing, the “concealed cellar is complete with a cellar door originating from the Oatlands Prison”, making the feature a “remarkable testament to the past”.

The home has a price guide of $900,000 to $950,000 and is on the books of Wendy Squibb of Harcourts Ulverstone and Penguin.

The floorplan reveals a trap door in the formal lounge that leads to the hidden cellar that contains exposed stone walls, rustic tiled floors and statement art.

According to Southern Midlands Council, Oatlands Gaol dates back to around 1837 and most of the buildings were demolished in 1937.

The home for sale is called Stromness and has undergone multiple renovations since its 1900s construction.

A Federation-style design, the property is a deep red brick build with a wraparound verandah and decorative timber features.

Interiors are a mix of old and new with stained glass windows, beamed ceilings, bold feature walls, plaster archways and designer pendant lighting.

As stated on the listing, the property has been repainted and rewired, and a new roof was installed in recent years.

There is ample space to entertain with an alfresco dining area with woodfired pizza oven and landscaped gardens. Walking and riding tracks are also close by.

East Devonport is a waterside postcode in Tasmania where the median house price is $415,000, according to Domain’s December 2023 House Price Report.
