If you have ever dreamed of owning your own island, now is your chance.
Not one, but three private islands in Tasmania are currently for sale: Ninth Island and Little Dog Island in the Bass Strait, and Ram Island on the east coast.
Ninth Island and Little Dog Island are part of the Furneaux archipelago in the strip of ocean between Victoria and Tasmania.
It’s one of the most remote and starkly beautiful corners of Australia. Temperatures in the winter can get as low as six degrees, and tens of thousands of birds call the archipelago home.
In the nineteenth century, the Furneaux islands were the site of tragedy. Tasmania’s Indigenous Palawa people were forcibly relocated to Flinders Island and interned there under a brutal colonial policy.
Today, 795 people live amongst the 100 islands that make up the archipelago.
Little Dog Island is one of them, a 42-acre patch of mountains, dunes, and white sand beaches surrounded by ocean.
The owner is selling Little Dog Island for expressions of interest around $750,000.
There is already a rustic timber cabin with a composting toilet on the island, ideal for camping getaways. Owners can also build a dwelling or a tourist venture, although a council permit will be needed first.
Lady Barron Wharf on Flinders Island is just a fifteen-minute boat trip away from Little Dog Island. There are two other freehold titles on the island.
Also for sale in the Bass Strait is Ninth Island, a rocky 40-acre outcrop about 12 kilometres north of Bridport.
Ninth Island is teeming with native birdlife, including petrels, cormorants and penguins.
There is currently a derelict tin shack at one end of the island, overlooking the sea. A development application has been sought for a solar powered eco villa.
The island is for sale for offers over $2 million with agent Peter Huang from Yong Corporate.
Further south near Little Swanport on the east coast of Tasmania, Ram Island is for sale.
The 64-acre island is a more manicured option, thanks to a decades-long construction project by owners Ralph and Caralyn Mansfield.
They spent eight years living on the island in a caravan while they built a bespoke three-bedroom, timber-clad house on the island.
The island and house are for sale with a guide price of over $4,950,000.
