Two of The Block 2020 homes have been put up for rent, each asking for more than $10,000 a month for the fully furnished, five-bedroom homes.
Harry and Tash Pavlou’s renovated, 1920s bungalow at 364 New Street, Brighton, is the most expensive, asking $2700 a week in rent , with an eye-watering $13,500 bond.
Next door, at 362B New Street, the 1940s home renovated by Sarah and George Bragias is also for rent and asking $2500 a week . The bond is $12,500.
The houses are two of the three that were bought under the hammer by IT entrepreneur and serial Block buyer Danny Wallis, who splashed just over $11.8 million at the auctions last year. He told Domain after the auctions that he had not yet decided what he would do with his three properties, except he was sure he would not be living in any of them.
He bought Sarah and George’s house – at 362B – for $4,000,002 and Harry and Tash Pavlou’s – at 364 – for $4 million. He also snapped up Daniel and Jade Joyce’s home at 362A New Street for $3.8 million (which has not been listed for rent).
Despite the high price tags, the two properties being rented are expected to be tenanted by the end of this week, after being listed just a week ago.
Head of operations with Belle Property South Melbourne Loic Mamet said both properties had been very popular.
“We only had one open for inspection last week and we’ve already had applications on the properties,” Mr Mamet said. “They’ve been very popular and they’re not cheap either.”
Mr Mamet said though some parts of the rental market had been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the upper end of the market had been strong.
“It shows regardless of how the rental market has been affected by coronavirus, the upper end of the market has not been affected as much,” he said.
The types of tenants looking to rent were those wanting to test the waters and see if they can live in Brighton, before buying there, Mr Mamet said.
Others were looking for somewhere to live while they renovated their own homes.
Mr Mamet said these properties were two of three with high rents. Another at 32 Mary Street, St Kilda West, had been listed for $2250 in weekly rent. The bond is $11,250.
“We’re seeing the same people at all three properties,” Mr Mamet said.
As well as the Brighton homes, Danny Wallis also owns Mark and Mitch’s home from The Block 2019, where he paid $3,374,000 for 38A Grey Street, St Kilda.
He also snapped up a home in The Block 2012 season in South Melbourne for $1.4 million, later allowing its use by charity Ronald McDonald House.
