This property presents as warm and welcoming but two rooms inside are anything but.
Buyers at open for inspections would have been stunned to find terrifying twin jail cells on the floorplan. And they are unavoidable, built into the home between the kitchen and the living room.
The four-bedroom house is on the market in the US for $US275,000 ($402,000) and a new owner has recently swooped.
The listing in the town of Celina in Ohio sparked a viral sensation on TikTok, and despite the sinister feature, the real estate agent’s phone rang hot with prospective buyers, according to the New York Post.
The advertisement from Superior Plus Realtors seems normal, with a living room adorned by a chandelier, a blue kitchen, an indoor pool and a games room, until you to come across rolling images of side-by-side authentic jail cells, with iron bars, narrow bunk beds and tiled floors.
The cells once held prisoners in Allen County Jail, including the Depression-era gangster John Dillinger, who was played by Johnny Depp in the 2009 movie about his life, Public Enemy.
The listing agent Ryan Stackhouse told the Post: “The original owner of this home was a big John Dillinger enthusiast, and he was able to purchase these jail cells that Dillinger was allegedly held in.”
The listing makes no mention of the jail cells, which were incorporated into structure after the vendor bought them in 1972, and so will not be journeying to the vendor’s next property. But the agent has been open in discussing them, and the house has been snatched up, going under contract.
The photos also don’t try to hide the cells, showing plenty of shocking detail.
“Here’s your opportunity to own a piece of Celina history! Entertain your guests with the indoor swimming pool, sauna, and full bar area!!!” the listing says.
“Serious, pre-approved buyers only.”
Dillinger was shot dead in 1933 by the FBI after escaping a month earlier, allegedly from those jail cells, in Allen County. He robbed several banks and committed murders during the spree.
Stackhouse told the Post the property was built as a party palace the games room includes a bar, booths and a pinball machine.
So those cells might come in handy one day as a drunk tank.
