Melbourne based furniture label VUUE is gaining international recognition after launching at New York’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair.

Created by husband and wife duo Ceci and Aydin Keyvanloo, VUUE responds to a gap in the market for classic, customisable furniture pieces that are appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use.

Ceci is originally from the United States and has worked for over 100 brands including Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs, while Aydin has designed and manufactured fixtures for Starbucks and Chanel plus his own label CUBIC.

“After attending many furniture shows, we found that there are a lot of interesting furniture pieces out there but not much of it was well priced and readily available to the market,” Ceci says.

“Unfortunately the market is flooded with knock-offs of the same few designs that we see over and over. I would imagine people are tired of seeing the same thing and are frustrated with the lack of options available at a reasonable price.”

While most furniture is designed for a particular environment, VUUE’s debut collection, Mornington, has been specifically created to suit residential, hospitality and commercial spaces.

“We wanted to design something that works in any environment and has an elemental appeal,” Ceci says.

The result is Mornington – a collection of nine key chair and table items that can be customised to one of 78 different colour and material combinations, 60 of which can be used both indoors and out.

The classic style of the pieces and customisable material palette mean the pieces work as well around a kitchen table as they do in a hotel restaurant.

“Making something that works for indoor as well as outdoor isn’t easy. The requirements for outdoor are much more challenging and the material selection is restricted,” Aydin says.

The hero material of the collection is aluminium, which is complemented by material options such as plywood and teak and for table tops and seats.

“Aluminium is a great material. It’s fully recyclable and non-corrosive, which makes it ideal for the outdoors,” Aydin says.

“The wood grain and cushioned seat covers add texture and warmth – comfort doesn’t have to mean bulky overstuffed upholstery.”

Since launching at ICFF in May, pieces from Mornington have been purchased for numerous spaces across the US and Australia.

“As we had hoped, people have been able to imagine Mornington working in a range of environments from office cafeterias and seminar spaces to kitchen tables and outdoor spaces,” Ceci says.

The Mornington collection can be purchased directly from VUUE’s website, vuue.com.au.
