What does $1 million get you around Australia?

Care for your very own French chateau? Photo: Domain

Just the other day, I noticed a “For Sale” sign in my building for a similar one-bedroom apartment to the one I am currently renting. Interested to know more, I looked a little closer and noticed that it had an asking price of $1 million. I was taken aback. Yes, I’m well aware of Sydney’s median house price, but I’m also aware of how tiny my apartment is, and all the struggles that come with that. Are you telling me that the same place I’m forced to play Tetris with my furniture is worth a million dollars?

In my younger years, “a million dollars” sounded like a heck of a lot of money. At times I would even play the “What would you buy for a million dollars?” game with my friends, and never in my wildest nightmare did I imagine myself moving to Sydney, and the answer now being “not a whole lot”.

In need for a little pick-me-up, I began to think outside the Sydney-property-square and upon my search, I was relieved to find out that a million dollars does in fact still get you a lot (outside of Sydney and Melbourne, that is).

From a tennis court, to a private rooftop cinema, all the way to a four-bedroom ‘French chateau’ – let’s take a tour of what a million dollar property looks like around Australia. Will I ever be able to afford any of these? Most likely not. But it doesn’t hurt to window shop, right?
