One capital city is shining brighter than the rest when it comes to Christmas lights displays.
Melbourne has been revealed as Australia’s Christmas lights capital, with six of the ten most illuminated suburbs located in that city.
In total, there are 1431 homes in Melbourne that have registered a Christmas lights display this year with Christmas Light Search.
Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t rich suburbs where the best lights displays are to be seen.
“These Christmas light hotspots challenged the common assumptions about festive display and affluence,” says Ray White Group senior data analyst Atom Go Tian says.
Most of the top ten suburbs had a median house price below $1 million.
“The prevalence of Christmas light displays appears to be less about affluence and more about the perfect combination of space, community spirit, and family-friendly neighbourhoods,” Go Tian says.
“Outer suburbs typically feature more detached houses with larger frontages and gardens, providing the physical space needed for elaborate displays.”
Lights displays in the top suburb of Parkdale are mostly concentrated around a few major streets, including Vialls Avenue, Keith Street, Mount View, and Davey Street.
In contrast, decorations in Pakenham and Ferntree Gully are spread out over several streets, making them better suited to drive-by viewing.
Bombaderry in regional New South Wales is another town with a high concentration of Christmas lights.
The town’s pedestrian-friendly planning features, such as cul-de-sacs and courts, make it safer and easier for families to explore on foot.
