Simple magnets could just be a homeowner’s greatest asset.
A popular DIY TikToker explains the basic but effective way that a magnet can zero in on issues during a property inspection, be it for purchase or rental.
Mercury Stardust, who has 2.6 million followers and is home maintenance technician of 12 years, shares handy advice for renovations and home improvements, especially for people who feel intimated by the process or are leasing and cannot make permanent alterations.
Stardust told The Washington Post that a magnet won’t stick to low-grade metals used for hooks and railings.
A magnet can also locate a stud through a dry wall to firmly and confidently hang pictures or shelving. Stardust demonstrates this, running the magnet gently across the wall in a Tiktok video, until it sticks to the screw.
“You can get a five-pound magnet at any hardware store,” Stardust says.
Stardust says a stud finder will of course work – in response to some comments – but says other methods are at easy reach and can be found at craft stores. Or a magnet fridge could also do the trick.
Nailing the hook to the stud provides sturdiness and prevents the hazard of falling pictures or shelving. In Stardust’s video, two cats topple from a shelf which was not attached properly and could not hold their weight.
Stardust’s book Safe & Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair, was released by publisher Alpha, and outlines common problems and their fixes, while avoiding permanent changes.
