A bargain hunter has shared her shock at a “dream” discovery in an old cabinet she bought on Facebook Marketplace.
Amanda DeWitt acquired the Louis XVI cabinet secondhand and what she found, stacked inside, was the “craziest” thing to ever happen to her, she said in a now viral TikTok post.
The American TikToker, based in Dallas, revealed that inside was a full set of as-new, ultra-expensive Hermès china. A set, which DeWitt found, costs several thousands of dollars.
The same plates – the Mosaique collection – are still for sale on the Hermès Australia e-boutique. The porcelain dishes are decorated in geometric, 24-carat gold, hand-laid patterns, reflecting the décor of the Hermès boutique in Paris.
Dinner plates cost $465 each and dessert plates command $275 each. Dewitt’s miraculous stash consists of 12 plates.
“She is absolutely stunning, absolutely perfect, I got it for one-ninth of the original price,” DeWitt told her 58,000-plus followers of the glossy, ornate buffet.
Upon unlocking the doors, she found the full set of Hermès china, in distinctive orange boxes – a signature of the high-end French brand.
“Not to mention all of these plates are in perfect condition,” she said in the video, uploaded in early January.
“Literally what dreams are made of.”
However, DeWitt’s elation was short lived. She messaged the woman she bought the cabinet from to alert her to the find, and asked if she wanted them back.
An update on the video shortly after revealed the cabinet’s previous owner was coming to pick up the fancy dishes.
“All I know is that I had better have some good karma my way for telling her she left all that china,” DeWitt said. The video she posted to her TikTok, explaining she would not be keeping the china, has gained 2.1 million views.
DeWitt’s social media followers were divided on whether the woman really wanted them back, given they didn’t know she had given it all away in the first place.
“Ok but how did they repay you for your honesty?” one follower commented.
Another said: “I hope they at least refunded what you paid for the cabinet as a nice gesture for your honesty.”
Only a small number said they would have done the opposite and kept the collection. Others remarked they would have said nothing and waited to see if the woman got in contact, and then it was fair game to keep.
