The stairs in this $700,000 studio apartment look like an accident waiting to happen.

A unit listing in the US city of Seattle has been taking social media by storm after viewers caught sight of the unusual stairs leading to the bed.

The custom-designed stairs are made of stainless steel and twist in a knotty, organic manner.

The artistic handrail is attached to the ceiling, rather than the wall, in a move that is evidently driven by aesthetics rather than safety.

The listing was uploaded to Reddit with the caption “Do NOT try to go to bed drunk”.

A user replied saying, “I would die on those stairs sober.”

“I love how the photos went out of focus when they were on the stairs and the loft,” another commenter joked. “Like they were shaking out of fear when taking them.”

The unit is on the market for $US445,000 ($AU700,000).

It may not be the cheapest price, but the apartment is centrally located in the CBD. From the roof terrace, there is a direct view of the Space Needle, Seattle’s most famous landmark.

Inside the apartment, high 4.2-metre ceilings leave space for a study nook underneath the mezzanine bedroom.

There is an L-shaped kitchen with a stainless steel island bench that matches the Willy Wonka-style stairs.

Feature lights made from handcrafted glass hang over the living room.

“This cozy loft with new updated bathroom, custom staircase and window coverings and lighting is ready for a new owner,” the listing says.
