Ever dreamed of owning your own private island but never imagined it would be an attainable goal? Well you may be in luck.
Wade Island in Wee Jasper, which first went on the market in March, has been listed with a price range of just $600,000 to $650,000, less than Canberra’s median house price of $727,914.
Despite attracting a lot of attention, the 91-hectare island failed to sell at auction last Wednesday.
Just 90 minutes’ drive from Canberra, the island sits on Lake Burrinjuck, which is used extensively for fishing and watersports.
With rolling hills and abundant greenery, the island is untouched by the elements of human civilisations, with only kangaroos, wallabies and waterbirds calling it home.
The island is accessible by a land bridge when the water is low enough but mostly requires access via a boat.
The current owners bought the land more than 12 years ago for $485,000 and made plans to add cabins and turn it into a holiday destination.
While their dream never came to fruition, the island is DA approved for self-sufficient holiday cabins.
LJ Hooker Dickson agent Nic Salter-Harding, who initially listed the island on the market, said there had been a number of proposals from interested parties as to what they’d like to do with the land, with most interested in developing a tourism village.
“There have also been some unusual proposals including the creation of a koala sanctuary and a wagyu beef farmer who wants to move their cows to the island to stop them being poached,” he said.
