389 Barkers Road, Kew
Price range around $5 million

This John Beswicke-designed Kew manor is the former residence of the late governor of Victoria and Supreme Court chief justice, Sir Henry Winneke.

Three generations of Sir Henry’s family lived at 389 Barkers Road.

Beswicke designed some of the best-known municipal buildings and grand, private homes in Melbourne, including the Brighton, Hawthorn, Malvern and Essendon town halls, and Hawthorn East estate Rotha.

The property underwent a decade-long renovation which has reinstated its grandeur, and for privacy, is set back from the street in verdant, landscaped gardens.

Off an arched hallway unfold rooms with decorative plasterwork ceilings, colonnades, chandeliers and marble fireplaces.

A long formal living and dining area with bay window, and a sweeping master suite occupy the ground floor.

At the rear is a modern extension with a glossy kitchen and living area opening to a verandah overlooking a sandstone terrace, and a solar heated swimming pool.

Upstairs is a space that could become a guest wing, with a retreat or study, a bedroom with an ensuite, and private balcony.

Jellis Craig agent William Chen is taking expressions of interest until October 19, expecting about $5 million.
