Your Domain: Inside a 1928 Tudor dream home enhanced for modern luxury living

Blending an almost 100-year-old Tudor-style home with a sleek and luxurious modern renovation is no mean feat.

Built in 1928 but revitalised since, “Lynford” in the exclusive Brisbane suburb of Hamilton is a palatial property that defies the odds, seamlessly combining the original period home with a considered and well-executed modern enhancement.

The original house was built by architect E.P. Trewern. After purchasing the property in 2012, the current owners asked Brisbane-based architect Richard Groves to extend and renovate the house while retaining its Tudor features.

Being empty-nesters in a home set on 1,503-square-metres of land, they’ve made the decision to fly the coop themselves. The property is being marketed by Tyson Clarke of Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty who is taking expressions of interest with a guide of $6 million to $6.5 million.

Tall gabled roofs with exposed timber, a mix of stucco and exposed brick walls and leaded-glass windows will delight those who appreciate the character of older homes.

However, step inside and into the house’s newly extended main living area and the period luxury becomes modern. Full-height steel-frame windows and doors, which match the black timber detailing of the original home, open out onto a spectacular pool and sun terrace.

Exposed stone and brick from the original building can be found peeking through parts of the dining area, offsetting the sharp lines and contemporary design of the extension. A newly installed kitchen, a major part of the renovation as the existing space was unworkable, ensures cooking and entertaining is a breeze.

The front portion of the house, which includes a foyer, staircase, bedroom, lounge, sunroom and library, sports a more formal, classic feel. Unlike the polished concrete of the rear, these rooms have timber floorboards. Their original coffered ceilings and a brick fireplace have been retained. Wood panelling on the walls and ceilings, along with dark walls, keep things cosy.

Upstairs houses five of the property’s six bedrooms and two bathrooms, and like the extension, all have been luxuriously renovated for comfortable, modern living. The master bedroom has an adjoining studio, ensuite and walk-in-wardrobe.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get much better, an underground four-car garage has a wine cellar and windows that look directly into the pool.
