Your Domain: The eight most popular suburbs that overseas property hunters are looking at

Australia’s beachside communities certainly put us on the map as a tourist destination, but Domain data reveals they are also highly appealing to overseas-based property hunters.

Property search results from the past four weeks by overseas Domain users put Byron Bay at the most searched in the country and New South Wales. Beachside suburbs of St Kilda in Victoria and Surfers Paradise in Queensland also top the list for their respective states.

It’s not surprising Byron Bay tops the list, with actors Chris and Liam Hemsworth’s recent purchases drawing international attention.

“We talk about the ‘Hemsworth effect’ a lot in property,” said Domain managing editor Alice Stolz on Your Domain on Saturday.

“We also talk about ‘The Block effect’ in property and in Victoria the suburb most sought after is St Kilda at the moment. So you can think about how important it is for people.

“It really does help to drive up the popularity of that suburb.”
