For Chloe and John, seasoned travellers who live on Sydney’s upper north shore, March 14 is their lucky date. It was the date they met in Kenya, the date of their wedding, and the date their two-year-old-daughter Harriet was born.
The lucky day gave again last weekend, as they sold their Mount Colah home of six years for $215,000 over reserve on Saturday March 14.
The family were selling the three-bedroom home to fund their dream trip around Australia.
“Once we sell, we are off. We are going around Australia. We’ve been planning for a couple of years and hopefully we find our next home – wherever that may be,” Chloe told Your Domain ahead of the auction.
“The higher this goes, the bigger the holiday,” John said.
Chloe and John fell in love with the home and appreciated raising daughter Harriet in such a fantastic area so close to Australia’s natural beauty.
“You’re surrounded by bush. You’ve got Kurringai chase national park, you’re got Berowra just up the road. You’ve got space, you’ve got greenery, you’ve got Australia – and that’s a big drawcard.” Chloe said.
“It’s a beautiful home. We came in and we’ve done a lot to the place. We’ve transformed it from nothing to this beautiful sanctuary.”
Despite unrelenting rain, a substantial crowd had formed in the large backyard after a successful marketing campaign. Buyers remarked on the home’s cleanliness, convenient location and great backyard.
“What’s great about this house is that potential to extend later on down the track. Make it a big house, open it out to bigger living areas and kitchen,” selling agent Mark Seymour of Ray White Hornsby said.
Despite the lucky outcome, the auction had a rocky start. A first bid of $750,000 was knocked back by the auctioneer and the bidder raised it to $800,000 to be accepted.
But from there it was smooth sailing. Quick bids of $25,000 increments between three bidders saw the price reach $1 million. Mr Seymour then consulted with Chloe and John inside, who said they were happy to sell now the bidding had reached eight figures.
“They must love it as much as us,” Chloe said as the bidding soared.
Late to the action were a group of bidders who had the last say with a bid of $1.215 million. Chloe and John couldn’t believe just how lucky they were, having only expected a sale at $1 million.
“We’re going on a big holiday. A very big holiday.” John said after the hammer went down.
“It was a very special day for us. It just got a whole lot better.”
