Your home could be a literal castle: Why not live like a king in Scotland?

Looking for an international home with a historical pedigree, and a bit of pizzazz?

Here’s one option: an utterly spectacular Scottish castle, which would set you back at least $14 million, with Savills advertising the property for offers over £8 million.

The seven-bedroom home was designed by Scottish neo-classic architect Robert Adams for one Alexander MacKenzie. It was built in the late 1700s using stone from Seton Palace, which formerly occupied the site and at the time had fallen into disrepair.

Mr MacKenzie died shortly after the building was finished, and the castle was bought and kept by the Wemyss family until 2003.

Since then, it has had quite the luxurious update.

Kitted out with original French oak flooring, the striking edifice has had its turrets, chimneys and parapets fixed, and professional designers were called in to help select the fabrics used throughout the home.

Local stonemasons experienced in heritage properties worked for three years on the restoration, which preserved original features such as the doors and fireplaces.

Aside from the main house, there are also two self-contained apartments, perfect for any guests who – for some reason – might decide they’d like a bit of an extended stay.

Add to that the 5.2 hectares of grounds with “formal lawns” which, much like the good sofa, no doubt are only for special occasions.

If you feel like popping out for a bit of a sightseeing, it’s close to the coast and golf courses and just 16 kilometres from Edinburgh – so presumably commuting is an option if you’re keen on maintaining a day job while swanning around your many beautiful rooms.

The vendor, according to Edinburghlive, is tech entrepreneur Stephen Leach, who reportedly bought the home in 2007 for £5 million and is now looking to move abroad.

For what it’s worth, $14 million does buy you a bit in Australia – for example, a waterfront home with private jetty in Sydney’s Birchgrove, or a 4700-square-metre Warrawee trophy estate on Sydney’s upper north shore, or perhaps Australia’s most expensive terrace in Potts Point.

Another tech entrepreneur, Mike Cannon-Brooks, paid a little over that amount for a significant chunk of Southern Highlands luxury, and it was also the asking price for former prime minister Bob Hawke’s waterfront Northbridge home.
